-By Telegraph — Copyrlght).
Auckland, Sunday. Keen competition among visiting and local riders resulted in exciting racing at the Western Springs Speedway last evening. There was an attendance of 3500 people. The most exciting race was that in which E. Langdon, the world champion, defeated W. Phillips, who challenged him for the gold helmet. Although he drew the" outside running, Langdon took the lead at the first corner and Phillips was unable to pass the holder, who eventually won by a length. Other visiting riders were in good form as were the majority of the local men, notably D. Mattson, cousin of the Dominion champion. He won the January handicap in good style. The f astest time was made by Phillips who covered the mile in lmin 16 4-5 seconds. He also did one lap in 18 2-5seconds. which is one-fifth of a second faster than the official lap reeord. A fault in the lighting system resulted in half an hour's delay. The time was devoted to community singing, led by two English riders, E. Gregory and T. Stevenson.
