heavy spills occur on western springs track CAIRNS IN HOSPITAL

Auckland, Sunday. A spectacular collision between two cinder track machines, resulted in both riders being thrown heavily and rendered unconscious at Western Springs Speedway last evening. R. Gairns, aged 34 years, married, was later admitted to the Auckland hospital suffering slight concussion and a fractured collarbone, while tbe other, F. Day, eseaped more ligbtly and competed later in the evening. The accident occurred at the conclusion of the fourth heat of the January Handicap. Th& winner, D. Mattson and D. Stevenson, second, had already passed the post when Cairns and Day were coming out of the last corner. Just before crossing the line, Cairns running last, accidently touched the rear wheel of Day's machine with his own, and both men were thrown on the track immediately in front of the judges. The injured men were attended by ambulance men and it was some time before either regained his senses. Day was the first to recover. Cairns was not helped to his feet for over five minutes.
