FARMERS' UNION

RAGWORT INCREASING The exeeutive of the Opotiki branch of the Farmers' Union held the -first meeting of" the New Year on Thursday morning, but owing to the pressure of haymaking operations it was only poorly attended. The president, Mr. A, E. Martin, reported that the county council had now agreed to press for de-rating. Mr. R. Looney asked if something further could not he done to get the Government to move in combating the ragwort pest as it appeared to be steadily increasing in the distriet and unless something was soon done it would become a very real menace. Mr. Martin replied that the Dominion exeeutive was holding a very large meeting in Wellington on January 15 to discuss relief and assistance for the farming eommunity, and it was hig'hly probable that the question of the ragwort menace would be brought up there.
