THAMES MEETING CHANCES OF GAY IDEA IN GOLDFIELDS CUP. CHROMADYNE LIKED IN SPRINT.
(Notes by "Canard') First of the country circuit the Thames meeting starts to-day. Once the club was in the forefront of the racing world but it has suffered with the town and is now among the small fry. However, sympathy nominations j enable it to lceep its head above water j i and though the stalces are small the puhlic usually attend fairly well. The ] club is most conservative and is not installing the win and place totalisator which will probably be reflected in heavily reduced turnover.
The Tapu Handicap opens the ball and 18 are carded. Of these most promise has been shown by Roman Mascot, British ' Columbia, Hushing, The Pullet, On Approval and Trickle. The last is very fast for five. It is usually a race in which any thing ) but the favourite wins and public : fancy is likely to be wrong in selecting " British Columbia The Pullet Hushing In the Highweight there has often been an upset especially when one of the placed horses weighed in light one year. If there, Prince of Orange, High Pitch and Welcome Boy have all shown recent form though Grand Talk and Neil are not to be despised. However it looks like Welcome Boy Prince of Orange High Pitch
The weaker class of hacks is eatered for in the Pipiroa but there are one or two with pretensions to fair form. Among these is "Jimmie" Buchanan's Hawthorn who spreadeagled a field better than this at Pukekohe. Mungatoon, Te Taone, Lord Willonyx, Chang, Prince Colossus (who paid the big Ellerslie : "divvie") Great Britain and Fancy Boy, wbo are fair sorts. Unless an upset comes the favourites may be Great Britain • Hawthorn Chang Ten are accepted for in the Goldfields Cup and it is perhaps the worst field for years in this event. Speedmint heads the list and if she is there might be very hard but in the first place she is not a certain starter and in the second she may find the distance too short; in addition she is a bit small for 9.0. Chief Joy has been a very broken rod to lean upon of late but might fihd this in his compass. If the sting were out he would better fancied. Whakapara went so badly at Ellerslie that he cannot have a cliance here on that running. If he does take out there should be some explanations. Grand Tea is trained on the course and is well, well enough to take out if conciitions suit him. Te Hoia is useful and Alloy won two higliweights here previously. But Gay Idea now owned in the district reads the best on her third and other placings at Ellerslie. Running true to form she should be oqual to winning. Cynthia N who has been sold to Mr. Davis, the owner Pillow Fight, Pliar Lap and Eaglet is not a likely starter. Glenrata is in the Highweight and Currajong has not done anything to suggest success here, particularly as he was once trained at Thames and was thrown out. They are a lot which suggest that the acceptances are rather flattering to owners. If started the best may be
Gay Idea Grand Tea Speedmint * * The Parawai Stakes for two-year-olds has drawn ten babies and of these Gay Sheila, Bonny Gay, King Mestor and Glenromney are the only ones with experience worth noting. Gay Sheila is likely to be heavily baeked, but Bonny Gay may give her a fright, whilst King Mestor has been competing with better class stuff. Glenromney ran well early in the year at Avondale and was put aside. He might be the better for his spell. They are mostly unknowns with preferences for Gay Sheila Bonny Gay King Mestor On his recent running Chromadyne stands out in the Flying. He ran two thirds in first class company at Ellerslie and the big Thames course will suit him down to the ground. Whakapara is in the Cup and King's Archer is more suited byrthe President's Handicap on the second day. Gold Day might be the hardest to beat" and Royal Gallant is a good beginner. The issue looks to lie between Chromadyne Gold Day Royal Gallant The hack mile has drawn nine of whom Glenrata, Currajong, Hawthorn, Illuminelli, Reviver, Great Britain and Trickle all have other engagements. Again this looks like a flattering list. Given a start the prominent ones may be Great Britain Hawthorn Roxy Brampton, Hannibal and Pclting are the only ones in the last race not engaged elsewhere and they are no wonders anyway. On Top an acceptor is dead and so may. some of the others be (for the second day.) It is a poor field with so mapy doubles and if started there may be support for Gold Day Chromadyne Brampton
