CORNERING OF WORLD'S GOLD SUPPLIEff UNWISE THE GOLD STANDARD

Rugby, Jan. 10. The Morning Post commenting on the proeeedings of the committee 'snpports the British contention that until the conditions have been removed which brought about the general breakdown of the gold standard, the

reattachment of sterling to gold would aggravate rather than diminish the existing confusion. The Post says that Britain is prepared to cooperate in restoring the gold standard but first and foremost there must be a settlement. Exehanges must be released from restraint, and creditors must be prepared to offer their debtors reasonable access to their markets. Finally, the insensate eompetition to corner world's gold suppjies must cease. In insisting on the fulfilment of these and other prior conditions it is the British Government and not its opponents in controversy which is showing itself the best friend of the gold standard for if as the result of the premature stahilisation of the pound on the gold basis Britain were forced off the gold again that would be the end of the gold standard for good and all.
