County Haif-Holiday. Wednesday was the day decided upon hy the Rotorua County Council at its statutory meeting yesterday as the day to be observed as the weekly half-holiday throughout the county. This is the same day of the week as formerly observed. Bank Imterest The Rotorua County Council has decided to support a resolution passed by the Kaiapoi Borough Council urging upon the Minister of Finance to bring down legislation introducing the compulsory reduction in the •rate of bank interest. "E. and O.E-" "They must be in a mess in Wellington," remarked Mr. H. P. Ford, chairman of the Rotorua County Council yesterday, when the elerk mentioned that no reply had been received to one of the couneil's communications, despite the fact that two months had elapsed.
Vote of Thanks. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. R. Copeland Smith by the Rotorua County Council yesterday for his offer of a landing ground for the aeroplane of another of the Smith family, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. The council also expressed its appreciation of his offer of a paddock for the parking of cars thus relieving the congestion upon the county roads. Popular Wireless Owners. Anyone who was known to be the possessor of a wireless set yesterday afternoon found that he or she had quite a large number of acquaintances. The reason for this was the general desire to listen-in to the description of the arrival of the "Southern Cross" on its trans-Tas-man flight. Quick Work It was reported at yesterday's meeting of the Rotorua County Council that a farmer who was driving his herd of cows along the road near Ngongotaha stopped for a few minutes to go into a neighbour's place j for a cup of tea, when he returned to the road after a few minutes the herd was gone — they were in the pound. A & P Fields Competition. A meeting of the eommittee selected by the Rotorua A & P Association to supervise the carrying out of the Fields Competition was held yesterday when Mr. C. Dalgleish,. of the Department of Agriculture, outlined the proposals to be considered. It was finally decided to run the competition upon similar lines to those which had been so successful in the Putararu district last season.
A Legal Point A legal opinion was quoted to the Rotorua County Council yesterday tRat in the event of the council granting permission to any settler to put ' in a cattle stop in place of a gate should any accident happen the council was liable to a suit for damages. 1 Rural Credits "The rural intermediate credits is a wash-out," remarked Cr. J. Martin at yesterday's meeting of the Rotorua County Council. "There is j plenty of money, but we are afraid to invest. The eommittee has to take the responsibility, and is afraid to do so as things are at present." The Francis Cup. At a meeting of representatives of the Bay of Plenty bowling clubs, held at Te Puke, a motion from the Opotiki Club, to alter the rules so that in future the Francis Cup tourneys be held in rotation of clubs instead of towns, was carried unanimously. The meeting also decided, after full discussion, to form a Bay of Plenty centre, comprising the two Opotiki and two Tauranga clubs and the Te Puke, Rotorua, Whakatane, and Taneatua Clubs. This decision was arrived at subject to confirmation by the clubs concerned. Farmers' Rates. ! The Stratford County Council has asked the Rotorua Council to support a suggestion that the Government pay all farmers' rates to local bodies and | also waive all claims for land tax. , The Rotorua County decided to give 1 the movement its support. Over The Tea Table. Towards the close of the recent polo sports in Matamata an incident occurred which once again should impress upon motorists the need for care in seeing that their cars are not in gear .before attempting to I start them, says the Record. Afternoon tea had just been finished when a car-owner cranked up to go home. The car was in gear, and it travelled through a pile of dishes, breaking a quantity, with several men clutching to it in an endeavour to prevent it from going over a bank. Fortunately no one was injured, and no damage was done to the car, though much excitement was caused at the time. Control of Ragwort In connection with a notification by the Department of Agriculture to the Rotorua County Council, that the department was experimenting with the Alexander method for the eradication of ragwort, the council has decided to aslc the department for the loeation of the experimental plots so 'that councillors could see the work in progress themselves. County Relief The Rotorua County Council is paying out close upon £400 per week in unemployment relief wages.
