HOW DOTH THE BEE
OAMARU MAN FINDS OUT FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE SWARM INVADES HOUSE After chasing news stories for many years both in Timaru and Oamaru one came to Mx\ L. Kane, who is now attached to the permanent staff of the Oamaru gardens. Mr. Kane lives in a bungalow in the grounds, and a vagabond queen bee, attracted by the look of the chimneypot that gives access to the bedroom ftreplaee, decided to make her home with the Kane family. Naturaliy enough her retinue*, an exceptionally large one, followed her lead and down the chimney they came. Then followed an unequal battle. One man against a swarm of bees in an unfair handicap at any time, and several times Mr. Kane came down the ladder he had put up. Finally, a new idea struck him. He coupled up a long hose, turned on the water, and, with a "Fireman, save my child" expression, again advanced to the attack. The water hit some of the bees; the remainder started to hit Mi\ Kane who slid to the ground in record fashion. At last, he rang up an apiarist, who came, made friends with Her Majesty the Queen, and hey presto! all was peace. Writing of bees brings to mind the story of a function given under the auspices of a certain branch of the Farmers' Union. Turning to his neighbour at the festive board one guest asked what the other did. ' t "I am a bee farmer," came the reP1^. , "So am I," feplied the questioner, "but what sort of farming do you go iii for?"
