GOOD NEWS

The announcement that the Australian Commonwealth Government expects to end the finI ancial year with a surplus of £3,000,000 is one of the most ! encouraging items of news rej ceived over the cables for a !ong time. This surplus, we are told, is anticipated in spite of the generous relief given the wheat growers and a remission of taxation. Australia has certainly enjoyed a most bountiful season. In all States primary production has shown a marked increase and benefit has been reaped accordingly. But the recovery forecast is not due entirely to this factor. There is growing evidence that stabilisation and confidence are returning to the Comj monwealth, and that means more j than just a splendid season for I the primary producer. It means ' that business and finaneial men | are beginning to see their way I out of the fog of depression and i that sound hope in the return of jprosperity is steadily growing. i This manifestation of eonfidence ; and the indisputable proof of its ! existence in the buoyaney of the | revenue should go a long way to- ] ward brightening the outlook j for the New Year. Australia was | hit by the depression at an earl- | ier stage than New Zealand and. | her troubles have been equally as ! severe as our own. Therefore the faet that she is slowly, but surely winning her way back to pros- . perity should put heart into those who seem to have lost f aith , in the future of this Dominion. | In a smaller way we have better j opportunities for winning our j way back to stabilisation than Australia and if heart, brains and energy are put into the task there should be a deeided change for the better in this country before 1933 has run its course.
