SCHEME BEING CONSIDERED BY MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE
Rec. Jan. 3. London, Jan. 2. The Minister of Agriculture is hearing an application by the National Farmers' Union for compulsory max-king to indicate. the origin of imported meat. The New Zealand Meat Importers' Board, the Imported Meat Traders' Association and other organisations are opposing the proposal. Gounsel for the National Farmers' Union said New Zealand importers suggested that the granting of the applications would infringe the Ottawa agreexxxents, therefore it was very peculiax that the Australian Commonwealth Government favoured the, application if it could be done in a reasonable xnanner. He suggested it would further the spirit of these agreements because it was the prevalent desix*e to purchase Empire in preference tc the foreign produce. People would be ahle to distinguish Australian from Ax-gentine heef, and the order woxxld give Empire produce a gigantic advantage.
