WELL KNOWN FILM ACTRESS REFUSES TO FULFIL CONTRACT
— By Telegraph — Copyrlght).
Rec. January 3. Los Angeles, January 3. A suit for nearly 200,000 dollars damages was filed in the Federal Court here to-day against Marlene Dietrich by the Paramount Studios, charging her with a breach of contract. The ground of action is that she refused to work under the terms of a 4000 dollar weekly contract, and asks that she be enjoined from working for another producer. Mr. Emanual Cohen, vice-presid-ent in charge of the production, in explaining the action, said that since the completion of her last picture the aetress was paid 4000 dollars weekly on a contract expiring on February 19. Plans have been mad«* for another picture. With production arrangements complete, he said, Miss Dietrich arbitrarily refuses to go ahead; she now refuses to face the cameras and requests the cancellation of her contract for the f ew remaining weeks. Mr. Cohen said the costs of preparation for any picture are one of I the greatest items and cancellation j of the contract now would mean that Paramount would not get the Diet- ■ rich picture it has already paid her j for. By reason of her refusal the ; company has been burdened by an : accumulated loss of over 200,000 dol- | lars. i i Marlene Dietrich, who is a German j aetress, has been seen in several pic1 tures in New Zealand, the last one i being "The Shanghai Express."
