meeting concludes NELSONS VICTORY COMES HOME IN PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP KEWPIE'S TRIUMPH IN ONSLOW
Auckland, Saturday. A few light showers early in the day had very little effect on the curse or the attendance at Alexandra Park to-day, the concluding day of the Auckland Trotting Club's threedays carnival, but heavy rain which set in before the second to last race sent the large crowd scuttling for shelter, and miniature lakes quickly formed on the lawns and round the totalisators. Nevertheless the meeting was concluded xnost satisfaetorily, despite the fact that investments on the last two races were only a little over 66 per cent. of what they might have been had the rain held off. Saturday's investments amounted to £25,252, an increase over the £22,361 handled on the final day twelve months ago. For the meeting the amount handled was £78,729, compared with £85,571 last year. The decrease was a modest one of £6842, or about 7 per cent., despite eight double-figure dividends (averaging over £14) during the meeting and many large dividends paid by second horses. This indieates the popularity of trotting in Auckland. The meeting inst concluded was deemed to be most successful. Tamaki Handicap The opening event, the Tamaki Handicap, was not very interesting, for after Manna's Son, Katalo and Kohewah had turns in the lead the last named was the only one to trot solidly and she won easily to pay a dividend of over a score. Golden Eagle, having- her. first race, finished nicely in second place ahead of Wiriwhata, with Autumn Lu and Win Huon next to arrive. Park Hand'icap Fisher, after being handily placed early then lost his position, but he came again crossing the top and was actually in front at the bottom of the straight to win easily by a length and a-haif from the favourite, St. Felix, and Bingvn Chief, with Cimarron, Min Bells and Lislea following. The wimier paid the best part of a score. Nelson's Victory made amends for his cup defeat by winning the President's Handicap, for which he. was a good favourite. First Flight, Kewpie's Triumph, Nelson' s Victory, Brentlight, Great Parrish and Grand Canyon was the order when they had settled down and there was no change as they set out on the last lap. Three furlongs from home Nelson's Victory was taken to the front and he was elosely followed into the straight by Great Parrish and Brentlight, with the remainder well out of iti* Nelson's Victory had little opposition over the final furlongc and won easily by a length and a-half from a big outsider in Brentlight, with Great Parrish two lengths further back, well elear oi! Mountain Ore, Kewpie's Triumph and Cyone. N ew Y ear Handicap The odds-on fancy Pegaway led ail the way to win the New Year Handicap handsomely. Whippet went with him for a mile and was then sliaken off, Pegaway scoring hard hrld by a length and a-quarter from Dad's Hope, who had his neck ahead «>f Glanore. Whippet was fourth and Baron Bingen and Lady Yvonne were : noxt. i'ad's Hope paicl a doublc fig- :>• > ti; i'ajiid for second. Telegraph Handicap
Golden Direct led all the. way to the home turn in the Telegraph Handicap, Dav'-d McElwyn and Francis Lincoln being handy, well clear of Lady Amanda. In the run home David McElwyn came through to beat the three-yeaj'- oid by three-quarters of a tongi k, with Francis Lincoln a length :rnt a-baif back. Lady Amanda was :t modr-iate fourth and Wee Maehine (who put in one very bad lo'enL), Pukemiro, Princ-e Etawah: and 'I- :>y followed. Associaticn Handicap Garner completed her third win of the meeting when she piloted the field home in ihe Association Handicap for which she \e,s favourite. Parrish Belle, Bessie Parrish and Zanzibar set oi. t to niake the pace a cracker, the favourito being a long way back at ihe end of three furlongs, but she was handy enough setting out on the final ciriuiit, and led into the straight and hent Bessie Parrish very comfortably, with Parrish Belle a fair third. ■ Zanzibar. Explosion, Marble- Star, • YYindvhal and Moko Girl followed. Garner iuty not finished winning yet. Kewpie's Triumph made no race of ihe Onslow Handicap, for he took charge crossing the top and had little difficnlty in winning by a couple of lengths from Pageant, with First Flight a length and a-half away third. Brentlight was fourth and Dan Direct and Carnui followed. Brent Zolock led for the best part of a mile, but " he.compounded when he was collared. Carnui did not enjoy the best of runs, and neither did First Flight. Final Event
_ The final event, the Premier Handicap, was run in a tropical downpour, which set in prior to the preceding race, and the track quickly became sloppy. This suited Homeward, who literally revelled in it. Sbe trailed David McElwyn and Nathaniel to the hometurn, and then came away to win easily by nearly a length from David McElwyn, with Whippet right pp. Next were Hohoro, Rolfe Audubon and Realty. Two unlucky run■pers were Realty and Hohoro, who were involved in a mix-up soon after the start. Detailed results: — * • TAMAKI HANDICAP ! Of £100; 15 miles; limit, 3.48. -
