SILVER SCORN WINS THE GREAT NORTHERN DERBY HURDLES TO HIGH PITCH Speeial to Post Auckland, Monday. The following are the results of the third day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting run at Ellerslie to-day: — ELLERSLIE HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile. 10— LADY SPY, 7.13 1 7— GRAND REVIEW, 7.9 ' 2 14— TRANSACTION, 7.0 ; 3 Also started: Azalea, 9.5; Knight of Australia, 8.13; Thespis, 8.11; Psychologist, 8.10; Prolyxo, 8.8; Sunny Bachelor, 8.3; Grand Spirit, 8.1; Currajong, 7.8; Loombination, 7.1; Jewelled Girdle, Roxy, Landlubber, 7.0. Won by 7 lengths; 1£ lengths. Time 1.38 3-5. Lady Spy made absolutely no race of the Ellerslie Handicap, shocking riding of some of the apprentices helping him. Prolyxo was the first out followed by Lady Spy. These two "were the first into the straight and Lady Spy went on to win by seven lengths from Grand Review. The winner paid double figures. Transaction was third, followed by Grand Spirit, Thespis and Prolyxo. MID SUMMER HANDICAP Of £200; 2-year-olds; 6 fur. 2— WEATHERWISE, 7.12 1 9— GAY SHEILA, 7.13 2 1— MIDIAN, 9.4 3 Also started: Gay Seton, 9.0; Pegged Exchange, 8.8; Tavern Knight, Bon Rapide, 7.11; Pelagia, 7.6; Epigram, 7.5. Won by a head; half a length. Time 1.14 1-5. At the straight Gay Sheila was leading followed by Weatherwise. Midian was in front at the distance, but Weatherwise came through to win by a head from Gay Sheila with Midian half a length behind. Epigram was fourth, followed by Bon Rapide, Gay Seton. NEW YEAR HURDLES HANDICAP Of £350; 2 miles. —HIGH PITCH, 10.5 1 6— PATUTAHI, 9.10 2 4— ARCADE, 9.11 3 Also started: Captain's Gift, 11.4; Prince of Orange, 10.8; Trowbridge, Sub-Editor, Principal, 9.0. Won by four lengths; a head. Time 3.44. There was a sensation in the New Year Hurdles when Prince of Orange the Favourite, had an attaclc of colic at the post and was withdrawn, his investors losing their money. The second favourite Captain's Gift broke down when in a good position, which left High Pitch to -win comfortably from Patutahi, but then High Pitch would have taken a lot of beating. Principal fell at the second fence. High Pitch made most of the running. Patutahi cut Arcade out of second money. A.R.C. HANDICAP Of £750; 1£ miles. 5— RED SUN, 7.0 1 3— SPEEDMINT, 7.7 2 4— ANTIQUE, 9.9 3 Also started: Concentrate, 9.9; Gay Crest, 9.2; Great Star, 8.2; Royal Artist 7.12; Trishna, 7.1; Great Emblem, 7.1. Won by a neck; half a length. Time 2.34 1-5. Great Star went out favourite for the "Racing Club Handicap, Red Sun, however, winning comfortably. Royal Artist was the first to show out, but Trishna took up the running and led Run Sun. Trishna led into the straight but Red Sun moved up to win from Speedmint. Antique was third with Gray Crest fourth, Concentrate followed. The favourite was seventh. GREAT NORTIIERN DERBY Of £1750; U miles. 1— SILVER SCORN, 8.7 1 4— LA MODERNE, 8.7 2 2— GOLD TRAIL, 8.7 3 Also started: Silver Ring, Supreme Ruler, Tout le Mond, Jonathan, Pillow Fight, 8.10; Gay Marigold, 8.7. Won hy two lengths; ;] of a length. Time 2.34 3-5. Two competitors, Gold Trail and Tout le Mond lost chances from bumping in the Derby, which Silver Scorn won comfortably. Tout le Mond and Gold Trail were extremely unlucky. Jonathan and Pillow Fight made the running from La Moderne and Gay Marigold, but Silver Scorn moved up just before entering the straight and came through to win easily from La Moderne who finished better than the winning horse and should win on the last day. Gold Trail came up very fast to beat Pillow Fight being foled by Gay Marigold and Silver Ring. The time was very slow. COUNTY HANDICAP Of £200; 7 fur. 3— MOONFLEET, 7.10 1 18— PRINCE COLOSSUS, 7.0 2 6— WOODFULL, 8.6 3 Also started: Lordly Knight, 9.3; Royal Gallant, 8.4; Holly Lu, Blanford, 7.13; Pelting, Merry Lap, 7.8: Broken Rule, 7.6; Grand Sport, 7.5: Desert Star, 7.3; Echo Song, Court Raven, Toplight, Gay Broney, Hushing, Great Britain, 7.0. Won by a head; a length. Time. 1.26.
Prince Colossus paid close on two score for second place, when Moonfleet just beat him by a head! When the field settled down, Prince Colossus showed the way to Broken Rule, Blanford, Holly Lu and Great Britain. Prince Colossus had every chance, but Moonfleet wore him down to win with Woodfull a length back third, followed by Broken Rule, Holly Lu and Pelting'. Lordly Knight will improve. NEWMARKET HANDICAP Of £500; 6 furs. 1— TEA TRADER, 8.12 1 7— L'ALLEGRO, 8.4 2 6— CHROMADYNE, 8.0 3 Also started: Lady Quex, 9.1; Arisus, 8.13; The Quorn, 8.7; Exaggeration, 8.0. Won by a length \ a neck. Time 1.12 3-5. With a change of riders Tea Trader ran a very different race for Morris, and won the Newmarket Handicap nicely from L'Ailegro, who will also do better later. Tea Trader led all the way with L'Alegro and Chromadyne handy. GLASGOW HANDICAP Of £300; 7 furs. 3— KING'S ARCHER, 8.2 1
1— CRICKET BAT, 9.3 2 4— MERRY DAMON, 9.1 3 Also started: Maori Boy, 7.11; Lord Val, 7.9 ; All Humbug, 7.7 ; Karangapai, Jalldy Karo, 7.0. Won by a length; 1 § lengths. Time 1.26 2-5. Getting the best of the start, King's Archer led all the way from Cricket Bat, who spoilt his chances by trying to savage Lord Val during the race. King's Archer showed the way to Karangapai and Cricket Bat with Lord Val well away. Cricket Bat took to Lord Val, who knocked him back. All Humbug made a momentary move into second place, but failed in the run home.
