AUSTRALIA'S REPLY

WICKETS GO CHEAPLY Rec. Jan. 2, 7 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 2. The weather was beautiful and over 65,000 spectators were present before the first ball was bowled. The gates were closed before the game started. Six minutes were sufficient to close England's innings, which finished with a beautiful eatch by Richardson in the outfield. A considerable gloom fell on the crowd by the Australian start, the wickets falling at one and 27. Bradman commenced confidently, making vigorous strikes. Allen and Larwood were in good form. Woodful made 26 in 81 minutes. The partnership realised 51 runs. McCabe was out to a poor stroke, but the bowling was most excellent. Bradman scored 50 in 93 minutes. Richardson was confident and gave a splendid display. He batted for 44 minutes and hit three boundaries.
