ELLERSLIE ON MONDA Y

"Canard")

FIFTY-NINTH G.N. DERBY WILL BE WONDERFUL RACE THE FIELD S REVIEWEp!

(Notes, by

Monday sees the third day at Ellerslie and the main races to be decided are the G.N. Derby and the A.R.C. Handicap, both having drawn class fields. ❖ * The Ellerslie Mile starts the hall 1 rolling with a field of 17 of whom Psychologist won on Tuesday over ten furlongs. He was plaeed well all the way and has only 101b more with less journey to go. Azalea went nicely last Monday and the Clifford filly is sure to be supported. Knight of Australia had two hard races in the Cup and Waitemata but the spell should revive hina. Thespis's bad running need not be held against hixn for he was badly placed all the way and naay naake amends. Latest advice is that he should run better. Further down the handicap is a Gisborne one in Sunny Bachelor and if h'e does not take out to-day it is, pretty sure to be to-naorrow. Of the rest there is -f'nrm fnv Prnlvvn. Granrl Review. Roxv

^ — , and Landlubber the last nanaed being pretty useful and quietly trained. However public support indicates Sunny Bachelor Thespis Knight of Australia from: — ELLERSLIE, HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile. Azalea, 9.5; Knight of Australia, 8.13; Thespis, 8.11; Psychologist, 8.10; Prolyxo, 8.8; Royal Gallant, 8.4; Limex, 8.4; Sunny Bachelor, 8.3; Grand Spirit, 8.1; Lady Spy, 7.13; Grand Review, 7.9; Currajong, 7.8; Loombinai^ion, 7.1; Landlubber, Jewelled Girdle, Transaction, Roxy, 7.0. » * j The Midsummer Handicap sees nine good two-year-olds engaged. Midian heads the list with 9.4 but he is a slashing good sort. Gay Seton is a winner and Gay Sheila won so eomfortably at Avondale that ,she may be handy. Tavern Knight has whips of toe and Weatherwise is a recent | payer. Bon Rapide may not see it out but finished fourth the other day whilst Pelagia is confidently expected by her connections. Both Pegged Exchange and Epigram were left on Tuesday but the latter is, from a great maro and might do well. A hard race but favourites may be Midian Pelagia ■Gay Sheila from. — MIDSUMMER HANDICAP Of £200; two-year-olds; 6 furs. Midian, 9.4; Gay Seton, 9.0; Pegged Exchange, 8.8; Tavern Knight, 8.5; Gay Sheila, 7.13; "Weatherwise, 7.12; Bon Rapide, 7.11; Pelagia, 7.6; Epigram, 7.5. Good class is represented in the New Year Hurdles and though Captain's Gift and Prince of Orange are both winners of late there was a real improver in High Pitch running well both previous day,s who now meets Captain's Gift on 17lbs and

Prince of Orange on 131bs better terms. Arcade is well treated for a second and a third placing only going up 61b for the two. Patutahi may not run and of the others Trowbridge I and Sub-Editor appeal most but form points to High Pitch Captain's Gift Prince of Orange from. — I NEW YEAR HURDLES 1 Of £350; two miles. | Captain's Gift, 11.4; Prince of Orange, 10.8; High Pitch, 10.5; Arcade, 9.11; Patutahi, 9.10; Trowbridge, 9.0; Master Rowl'ey, 9.0; SubEditor, Absent, Principal, 9.0. I Ten are left in the Racing Club's Handicap of U miles and despite his rise of 81b on his Summer Cup weight and 131b on his Auckland Cup weight few will go past Antique unless these have got to the bottom of him. II e has never loolced better in his life. Concentrate with 9.9 also has gone up 151b for his second and , Gay Crest still has his Cup burden. He may be mudh 'fitter than on Boxing Day*. Great Star is very versatile and has had a drop of 51b from Tuesday. Royal Artist has the hardest part to do to head off Great Star at any | time quite apart from others. Speedmint finished on well in the Cup j and won the G.N. Oaks last year (12; |i miless, 8.10) and 'shonlcl run well I| here. Trishna, fresh from two wins ti in Taranaki is also in the Stratford

Cup where the company is not so rich, and reads, better there. Great Emblem has a show but Red Sun seems to have lost form. If started Knight of Australia is entitled to respect but "Canard" is assnming that | he will start in the first race. It should be a great race with prefefences for Antique Speedmint Concentrate

froni. — A.R.C. HANDICAP Of £750; lh miles. Concentrate, 9.9; Antique, 9.9; Gay Crest, 9.2; Great Star, 8.2; Royal Artist, 7.12; Speedmint 7.7; Trishna 7.1; Great Emblem, 7.1; Red Sun, Knight of Australia, 7.0. * ❖ ❖ The main issue for pnnters will be the G.N. Derby and the question "Can Pillow Fight beat Silver Scorn and can either beat La Moderne"? Considering that Silver Scorn was unbeaten nntil L'Allegro in receipt _df 161b beat her by a length in a, mile run in 1.38 and( that La Modeine in I receipt of 721b (Pfflowfight carried 21b over weight) beat Pillowfight over the same distance by three lengths in 1.37 without being troubled it looks a's if "Granny" Macdonald's filly who is at level weights with Silver Scoxn and receiving 31b from Pillowfight should be the selected. But the journey is half a mile fui'ther and. theie j may lie the rub. All things being considered th'e race is likely. to be the most interesting for years and not only hecause of the meeting ef the Jcracks but because there are at least

lowfight), Tea Trader (very fast but a donbtful stayer, though fitter than ever he has been) Gay MarigoM (a very useful filly who has been stielcing on at th'e end of her races) and Silver Ring (last year's besfc two-year- . old). Thig does not mention Tout le Mond who is a stayer or he would not have entered for the Auckland Cup. It will be seen that the race is full of possibilities but on the running ,so far seen La Moderne seems the most likely to take the Blue Ribband. Almost anything ma.y happen j in such a field but it looks like 1 La Moderne ; Silver Scorn Pillowfight Should a surprise eome Tont le Mond 1 may provide it, j from; — G.N. DERBY Of £1750; three-year-olds. Colts and geldings 8.10, fillies 8.7. One mile and a half. Silver Ring; Supreme Ruler, Totit le Mond, Jonathan, Tea Trader, Pillow Fight, 8.10; Silver Scorn, Gay Marigold, Gold Trail, La Moderne, s.7. In the County Handicap the race | is very open. The seven furlong bar- ( rier is a bad one for those drawn out- : side and a great deal will depend j upon the marbles. Given a decent post position there is likely to be support fm-

Moonfleet Woodful Lordly Knight from : — COUNTY HANDICAP Of £200; 7 furs.

Lordly Knight, 9.3; Karangapai, 9.2; Woodful, 8.6; Royal Gallant, 8.4; Holly Lu, 7.13; Blanford, 7.13; Moonfieet 7.10; Pelting 7.8; Merry Lap, 7.8; Broken Rule, 7.6; Grand Sport, 7.5; Desert Star, 7.3; Echo Song, Court Haven, Booklaw, Toplight, Gay Broney, Prince Colossus, Hushing, Great Britain, 7.0. There are only seven left in the Newmarket for class sprinters including Lady Quex who has. been working wonderfully at New Plymouth but was beaten by Autopay in the Manawatu Stakes by 21 lengths in 1.12 1-5 (equal to the Ellerslie r> cord). Arisus, the next weighted, is the one who put up that time lasfc year. Tea Trader will probably take on this in preference to the Derby

and if well away may have a hand in 'the decision. The Quorn must have a good .show despite his rise of 51b, while L'Allegro reads better in the seven. Exaggeration went 1-13 to beat The Quorn in the Eleetrie and is now up1 121b. That is plenty and the time should beat her. Chromadyne is mueh improved and Hannon's ungainly gelding tore one off before here at very long odds beating many cracks. He is always one to have on one'.s side if paying a big figure especially of late. Summed up, however the favourites may be Arisus Lady Quex The Quorn from. — ■ ■ NEWMARKET HANDICAP Of £500; six furs. | Lady Quex, 9.1; Arisus, 8.13; Tea Trader, 8.12; The Quorn, 8.7; L'Allegro, 8.4; Exaggeration, 8.0; Chromadyne, 8.0. If wet Chromadyne will be fancied.

The Glasgow seven sees a fine field headed by Cricket Bat who is down 41b for running fourth in a mile won by L'Allegro. This fellow has not gone up for a win and a second to Merry Damon who has ' gone up 71bs. She finished so well that she will still be hard to head off. King's Archer.was expected by his party on Tuesday but turned dog on it in the last furlong. It is said that he has turned sour, which is a pity, for he once did a training gallop of 2.4 2-5 for ten furlongs and that is good enough to win anything in New Zsaland. Maori Boy comes to light now and then but the seven may not be far enough for him though should it rain he is entitled to much respect. Lord Val is handly weighted for one who was running sevens in Wellington in the winter with 9.8 on his baclc in good time. However he had Wiggins as pilot and the last twice has been ridden by Voitre and Humphries. Of the rest All Humbug appeals most. The ehoice may be L'Allegro Merry Damon Cricket Bat from. — GLASGOW HANDICAP Of £300; seven furlongs. Cricket Bat, 9.3; Merry Damon, 9.1; L'Allegro 8.6; Kings Archer, 8.2; Maori Boy, 7.11; Lord Val, 7.9; All Humbug, 7.7; Greek Gold, 7.4; Karangapai, Jalldy Karo, 7.0. In the event of a heavy track Lord Val and Maori Boy may show up.
