DAN DIRECT SCORES WIN IN DGMINION HANDICAP TAXPAYER LOSES DERBY
Epsom, Thursday. The weather was fins/ the trade fast and the attendance fair for an off-day at the secoqd day of the Auckland Trots to-day. — T wo Roans in Dividends Favourites were well out of it in the Dominion Handicap, but the eventual winner, Dan Direet, was well hacked for fourth choice while Glan- ' dore was at long odds. * Glandore tried to win all the way his attendants at the end of the first lap being Master Huia, Modern Light and Oliver Thorpe. Along the back Master Huia retired beaten, Glandore leading into the straight from Oliver Thorpe, Dan Direct, Baron Bingen and in the run to the judge Dan Direct won easily by a length and a-half from Glandore who was only a neck ahead of Oliver Thorpe, Baron Bingen and Modern Light. The last-named had an interrupted passage over the last bit. Garner on The Bit The trotters' race, the Epsom Handicap, was decidedly a better race than the Rowe Cup and although Garner won again easily she was kept back to her field. Hardy Grattan and Blue and Gold led a bunched field to the three furlongs, where both left their field, Garner leading into the straight from Dark McKinney, Billy Carbine, Bessie Parrish, Hardy Grattan and Moko Girl. The favourite won very comfortably by a length and a-half from Dark McKinney who •paid neai-ly double figures.for second, half a-length back was Bessie Parrish and Blue and Gold. Hardy Grattan finished close up; Blue and Gold was finishing on strongly. The winner is not done with yet. One to Brent Zolock Grent Zolock at double figures walked away with the Ranfurly Handicap. He began brilliantly and the others had a stern ehase. Harvest Child and Arabond were handy at the end of the first lap, but crossing the top Brent Zolock went away very fast and won pulling up by three lengths. There was a good finish for second, Kewpie's Triumph beating the favourite, Canui by a neck, with Arabond less than a length back. Grand Canyon, Kewpie's Guy and Mountain Ore followed. One to Native Berry Pegaway and Winshow were heavily backed in the Innovation Handicap, but the latter failed to perform generously in the early part. Rolfe Audubon, Flying Cloud (who was slow away) and Nahaniel, Native Berry, Bell Dial was the order at the end of half a-mile and there was little change at the home turn excepting that Flying Cloud had dropped back and Pegaway was showing up very wide out. Then Native Berry sliot out and won by a length and ahalf from JPegaway, who was set an impossible task from his position at the home turn. Whippet and Winshow were together a length away just ahead of Nataniel and Homeward. Big Tote Drop The totalisator handled £2,034 15s against £26,997 10s last year, a decrease of £6,653 15s. One For Togo Lee The only solid trotter in the Oak Handicap Win Huon gave "Togo" Lee a win and returned double figures. Margaret Parrish on the strength of her third on Tuesday was a hot favourite with £579 on her chances. Only £81 15/- was on the winner. The race was a procession, everything going up in the air until Katalo struek the front followed by Win Huon, Nelson Pirate (£295 10s) joined them at the stand and he and Win Huon cleared out from the rest of the fifid. Trotting solidly Win Huon won by three lengths from Nelson Pirate, Geo, Stubbs' new purchase, Autumn Lu doing best to get third.
