ROTORUA TOURNEY N. SMITH WINS MEN'S ' CHAMPION SHIP * SINGLES MISS N. BEVERLEY'S DOUBLE In most sections the final match is in-the Rotorua Tennis Gluh's Christ mas tournahient were played yesterday on the Government courts, a large attendance of spectators being present hoth during the morning and afternoon. Despite the overnight rain the courts were in good condition. With the exception of the men's and ladies championship singles, play during the morning was confined to seini-finals, all of these being keenly contested. N. Smith Wins • . Great interest was attached to the final of the men's championship singles between N. Smith (Rotorua) apd Livingstone (Hamilton)' and in this very fine -play was wrtaessed. Yn ihe first set,, which Smith won 6-(j, the winner was confiderit froin "the starf and with nice placements cohti'nually i had his opponent ih trouble, Xiiyjhgstone was resorting jto hard hittiiig tactics and as "a -result lost 'mant points. * ** Smith's play in the seeond set showed a tendency to be erratiO and he many times double-fauited in' jhis service. Finally, however, superior tactics prevailed against Livingstone'? hard play and Smith won the set 6-3. The final set saw Smith still a trifle unsteady and play was more even. Although still double-faulting at times hoady play eventually gave Smith the set 6-5 and the match by three, sets. Ladies Championship Singles In the final of the ladies' championship singles Miss Beverley . secured tbe title in a %match play ej£* "against Miss Newton in th.e finpl* set*. ICh'e game was hard f ought througKout and attracted mnch interest among supporters of hoth players. In the first set, which Miss Newton won 6-4, she had lier opponent on .the run, excellently well p'laced shots often finding Miss Beverley out of - position. , , The seeond shet, despite fine play by both players, was definitely "Miss Beverley's, her low shots often puzzlihg Miss Newton. The latter, however, was still placing her shots neatly, With the position one set all, int?rest in the final set was keen, but here Miss Newton's play slackened somewhatj whereas Miss Beyerley improved and gained well with her serve. Winning the set 6-2, she gained the decision 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. , Miss Beverley Again In the afterhoon play, Miss N. Beverley had another hard g.ame when she played Miss Brennan in the final of the ladies' handicap singles. In the first set she commenced strongly and won the set 6-2, but a good recovery by Miss Brennan in the seeond made the position all square. Recovering sgain In the final set, Miss Beverley cutp'laced her opponent and scored well at the net from the high rsturns of Miss Brennan. In the '.third game of the set Miss Brennan temporarily had her opp'onent hustled, but more experienced play gave her the match on the last set. The remaining matches to he deeided are the ladies handicap doubles and championship, doubles, an*d the men's championship doubles between Gavaye and Andrews and Jqnkipson and Livingstone. { Owjng to the numher of final, piatches in which Livingstone was engaged it has heen found impossible to decide this latter match in the time at his disposal, and as, a result the l.iatch, which is confined to Hamilton players, will he deeided at Hamilton at a later date.
