NINE BODIES FOUND
-By Telegraph — Copyrlght)
Hastings, Thursday. Nine bodies had been recovered hy 9.30 to-night. So far the search for the remains of N. Lowe has proved fruitless. The average opinion among the survivors seems to he that both vessels had the regulation lights burning, but the question 'of visibility appears in doubt. Opinions differ as to whether the night was clear or th© vision obscured by'a light blanket of misty rain. This will, of course, be determined by a complete marine inquiry which probably will he held early in the New Year. It seems evident from stories from 1 the survivors of the Doris that neither those on the launch nor on the i Tu Atu had any idea of the nearness of the two hoats. Within a split secs ond they were lunged into danger without warning. It happened so ; quicldy that it may he doubtful whetjier anyone could give a really cjear ; account of what actually happened. One survivor said that when the ; collision occurred, the men naturally ' made away from the side near the 1 collision, and this cireumstanee, com- ; bined with the blow from the Tu Atu resulted in the launch being turned right over. j ; Tt see'med clear to him on reviewi ing the Doris this morning and finding ! it undamaged that the hlow struck hy i the Tu Atu was a glancing one and } just sufficient to tip it over.
