After a morning of warbling many and various notes, Miss Smith heard a loud and peremptory knock on her door. "Ah," she nxused, "at least someone has an appreciation of music." She opened the door to a thick-set man, who looked as if he had ambition. "Pardon me," be said, "are you the lady with the contralto voice?" "I am," said Miss Smith, "and who are you?" "Oh, me? I'm the foreman on the road job down below. I' came up to aslc you would you pipe down on the high notes !a bit. My xnen have thrown down their shovels three times this morning thinking you were the whistle."
