FIRST DAY'S RESULTS FROM ALEXANDRA PARK TOTALISATOR RETURNS

Auckland, Tuesday. The weather was fine and the course in good order for the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club's three day carnival at Alexandra Parlt. There was an exceptionally large attendance and the first race was an hour late. The totalisator handled £33,133, a decrease of £3079 against last year's figures. Details were:— SELBY HANDICAP Harness, of £110. One mile ancl a half. Limit 3.48. For trotters only. 8— NELSON PIRATE, limit— J. T. Paul 1 5— WIRIWATA, 36yds— Step hens 2 1— MARGARET PARRISH, 48 yds — Owner 3 Also started: 12 Autumn Lu, 7 Drusern, 15 Gala Day, 6 Grand Triumph, 16 Katalo, 12 Kohewah, 9 La Triumph, 3 Manna's Son, limit; 4 Summertime, 48yds; 14 Mattie Herbilwyn, 10 Smooger, 11 Win Huon, 72 yds; 2 Nell Volo, 96yds. Won by two lengths; half a head. Times: 3.41 1-5, 3.39 3-5; 3.48 4-5, 3.44. In the Selby Handicap a gopd thing in Margaret Parrish was beaten into third place. She began slowly, and with half a mile gone she went to a bad brealc which lost her many lengths. Half a mile from home she was a long way back, but put in good work and narrowly missed second money by half a head. When the machine was adjusted Margaret Parrish carried most money (£692) from Nell Volo (£423). Nelson Pirate was entrusted with £138 and Wiriwhata had £194 invested on his chance. Manna's Son was the early leader from Katolo, and this pair carried on for the first mile, when Nelson's Pirate, Manna's Son and Wiriwhata were out by themselves. At this stage the favourite was making up ground fast. Nelson Pirate, however, finished well and won by two lengths from Wiriwhata, who prevailed by half a head from Margaret Parrish. Manna's Son was fourth, followed by Kohewah, Grand Triumph and Smooger. Nell Volo never went right at any stage of the journey.

Holmes 3 Also started: 15 Adjutant, 7 Cimarron, 6 Fisher, 19 Free Gift, 10 Home Brew, 9 Lislea, 12 May Chenault, 18 Mountain Guide, 4 Nellota, 13 Roylette, 14 Triquest, 16 Worthy Chief , limit ; 5 Bingen Chief , 8 Raider, 12yds; 17 Betterwin, 11 Stormy Mack 36yds; 20 Jersey Thorpe, 84yds. Won by half a length; a head. Raider was fourth. Times. 2.48, 2.50 1-5; 2.50 2-5; 2.50 4-5. All acceptors paraded for the December Handicap, Rey Direct, with £978, getting most support on the machine from St. Felix (£671), and Mazda (£492). Several of the field failed to go away promptly. Lislea and Fisher were the early leaders, but when a furlong had been covered the order was Fisher, Rey Direct, Worthy Chief, Raider, St. Felix and Home Brew, and this was the order as they passed the stand. Going along the back Fisher was still in command from Rey Direct, Raider, Worthy Chief, St. Felix, Stormy Mac and Lislea. As they swept round the final bend Fisher still held sway from Rey Direct, Raider, Worthy Chief and Mazda, the latter coming fast on the outside. Over the last furlong a great race ensued, Mazda getting up to win by half a length from St. Felix, who beat the favourites by a head-. Raider was fourth and then came Roylette, Free Gift, Lislea and Worthy Chief. AUCKLAND TROTTING CUP (Harness), of £700; 4.32 class, 2 miles.

Light, Cyone, Dan Direct, First Flight Harvest Child, ICewpie's Guy (bracketed with the winner) Kewpie's Triumph, Mountain Ore, Pageant, limit; Grand Canyon, Wilma Dillon, Direct Morning, 12yds; Peterwah, 24; Reremai, 36; Colorado, Mountain Dell, 48; Glenrossie, 84. Won by one and a quarter lengths; a length. Times 4.26 4-5; 4.27 1-5; 4.27 4-5. Dan Direct and Brentlight led the field past the stand. The order was then Dan Direct, Brentlight, Harvest Child and First Flight. Half a mile from home Great Parrish rushed to the front, turning into the straight with Nelson's Victory, First Flight and Brentlight. The winner stayed on to beat Nelson's Victory, while Peter Pirate came through to take third place, Brentlight was fourth. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP (Harness) of £120; 3.27 class; 1% miles. 6— BARON BINGEN, 48yds 1 1— TAXPAYER, limit 2 9— OLIVER THORPE, 12yds 3 Also. started : Lady Yvonne, Modern Light, limit; Ghenaway, Dad's Hope, Glandore, Qur Peter, 12yds; Country King, 36. Won by a neck; two lengths. Times 3.21 3-5; 3.25 4-5; 3.26 1-5. Taxpayer started smartly, and accompanied by Chenaway led right round to the straight. Taxpayer, on the inside drew away to just fail to win when challenged by Baron Bingen. There was a bad smash in the race, Dad's Hope falling and bringing down Lady Yvonne, whose driver, T. Grimmon, was flung high in the air, falling spreadeagled. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP (Harness), of £120! 3.35 class; 11 miles. 7— FRANCIS LINCOLN, 12yds 1 5— DAVID McELWYN, limit 2 1 — GOLDEN DIRECT, limit ...... 3 Also started; Bingen Chief, Lady

Amanda, Wee Machine, limit; Jersey Thorpe, 12yds; Claeo, Great Fame, Pukemiro, Sandy Pointer, 24yds; Worthy Cause, 48. Won by a length; a length. Time 3.24 4-5. Again the public crashed when Golden Direct went down to Franeis Lincoln and David McElwyn. Golden Direct was the first to show out, but Franeis Lincoln was soon with him and made the pace from Pukemiro, Cleao and David McElwyn. Franeis Lincoln was not headed, but David McElwyn just beat Golden Direct for second money. Pukemiro was fourth followed by Guid Hairst and Lady Amanda. The public was on the spot, the first favourite of the day, Carnui, coming home from Gran Canyon with Gountry King next. Carnui, Country King and Purser started best, but Brent Zolock was very fast and disput'ed the lead. Grand Canyon was last, but made up ground to turn for home with Carnui which lasted best. ' AKARANA HANDICAP (Harness), of £120; 2.55 class; llmiles. 2 — FLYING CLOUD, 12yds 1 3— REALTY, 12yds 2 5 — WINSHOW, limit 3 Also started: Nathaniel, Rey de Quest, Rolfe Audubon, limit; Bell Dial, Homeward, Native Berry, 12yds Hohora, 24; Pegaway, 36. Won by a neck; 11 lengths. Time, 2.49. The final disaster for the, public was when the hottest favourite of the day, Pegaway, broke her hopples in the last race and pulled' up. The race was won by Flying Cloud from Realty who was going very fast over the last bit.
