SUCCESSFUL SPORTS

ROTORUA CARNIVAL LOCAL ATHLETES PERFORM WELL AGAINST VISITORS M. HEREWINI DOES WELL As an opening to a full programme of sporting fixtures to be held in Rotorua during the present week an outstanding success was achieved by the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club in its second Boxing Day Carnival meeting' held on the Government Grounds yesterday afternoon. Although the weather conditions were dull, the sports were for this reason all the more enjoyable for spectators, a cool breeze off the lalce and the absence of over-warm sunshine making conditions very pleasant. A further feature which attracted the large crowd and kept the enthusiasm of the onlookers keyed to a hig'h. pitch, was the inclusion of many wellknown Dominion athletes of first-class standard as competitors. Against these, members of the Rotorua Club performed exceedingly well for so young a club and received their fair

measure of success. Outstanding among the Rotorua competitors were J. Christophers, who won the high jump with a jump of 5ft 45in. to beat J. W. Shirley, of Hamilton, by one inch, and M. Herewini, who scored well in field events to win the broad jump and javelin throw and secured second place in the shot putt. Competiton in the sprint events was very strong and the 100 yards handicap went to S. G. Fraser (Auckland) , who won both his heat and the final in even time. Tremendous enthusiasm was aroused over the 220 yards handicap, and in both the heats and the final the finishes were very close. In the final, G. T. Mitchell (Auckland) made a fine finish off 12 yds. to beat J. Pankhurst (17yds) in the good time of 21 2-5s. The appearance of S. A. Black, New Zealand champion and record holder, in the 440yds. handicap made the race one of great interest, and although he won comfortably in a fine sprint, but 2-5s. over standard time, he encountered strong opposition in J. Cochrane and A. Lillas who secured second and third places respectively. Rotorua lady runners encountered little visiting opposition and won both their track and field events. K. Peterson (Hawera), however, finished well in the 150yds. handicap to gain second place.

In most cases the visiting cyclists found their handicaps too much for them and generally were not pronxinent. In the cyclist lap race, however, the visitors filled first three places, Dwight beating Foubister in an outstanding final sprint. In the special invitation hurdles race of 120yds. H. Steele (Rotorua), won from H. L. Thompson (New Plymouth) by three yards, J. W. Shirley (scr), being placed third. Steele was also successful in the 440yds. hurdles event, beating A. Lillas _ (Rotorua) who had conceded him 30 yards. A great finish marked the one mile run, C. Randerson holding the lead until the straight was reaehed when H. McNiel appeared to have the race well in hand only to be beaten in an outstanding finish by Matthews (Rotorua), who finished very fast from well back. On the lighter side of the programme diversion was caused by the ofiicials' and bandmen's raees of 75yds. In the first, many effectively lost themselves when called to start, but suffieient competitors for a full heat were secured, E. G. Guy winning easily. Th^ time need not be mentioned. Resplendent in their new uniforms, the entire complement of the Rotorua Municipal Band surged across the finishing line like a massed banti should, E. Tasker winning by a nosc from three of his mates, Coe, Brownie and Harding who were placed second. Following are the detailed results: Track Events 100yds.
