TIIRILLING CONTESTS Something in the way of a real Westex'n Rodeo and Gymkhana is to be provided on Monday, January 2 at the Springfield Camp Stadium. A full measure of thrills and excitement is promised and the ground is so situated that an exeellent view can be obtained from natural grandstands of all events. The entertainment is one which cannot fail to draw a large attendance for there will be an abundance of fun as well as the interest aroused .by the contests. In the Bay of Plenty Open Championship the first prize will be £5 and the second £2 and it is anticipated that the cpntest will go over several rounds. There will be the first elimination followed by the semi-finals and finals. A plentiful supply of steers in good eondition will be available and the fun should be fast and furious. In the [Rotorua District Stalces and Sweepstakes a prize of £2 is offered and there will be exciting exhibitions of steer-roping and tying by 'Yanlc" Higgins, ex-Texas cowboy. The horse events include a buck-jumping competition in which there will he a prize of £1 for the person who stays on "Lightning," the untamed rogue of the Urewera for three minutes. There will also be calf-riding for boys, a greasy pig and many interesting 'events including a Lloyd Lindsay, hending, wrestling on horseback, saddling race, tug-of-war on horseback, men's hunter, high jump and lady over hurdles. The stadium is only eight minutes' di'ive from the centre of the town and there is parking space for 3000 cars if required. There is comfortable seating for 10,000 people. There will be nice clean grass, no dust, plenty of comfort and thrills throughout the day. A good carnival fixture.
