GRETA GARBO IN "SUSAN LENOX, HER FALL RISE" MAJESTIC ON MONDAY Grsto Garbo is starred in "Susan Lenox, Her Fall and Rise," which will open on Monday at the Majestic Theatre as a new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offering. This is Garbo's fourth talking picture and is regarded as the most colourful and dramatic o.f h'er sound efforts. It is of unusual interest because it niarks the first appearance opposite her of Clark Gable, sensational romantic find of the season, who is said to he next in line for stardom in his own name. Garbo's previous talkies, "Anna Christie," "Romance," and "Inspdration," were made under the direction of Clarence Brown. The new picture was filmed by Robert Z. Leonard, who directed "Marianne," "The Divorcee" and recent Marion Davies pictures. The story was adapted from the David Graham Phillips novel that first appeared serially in International Magazine, later becoming a hest seller in hook forra. It also seored a tremendous hit on the stage soine ten
years ago. Gable, in playing the lead opposite Garbo, essays his first straight romantie role. In his short time on the screen he has built up an enormous following, resulting in persistent demands for his appearances from fans and exhibitors alike. His last parts were in "Secret Six," "A Free Soul" and "Laughing Sinners" and "Sporting Blood," In the Garbo pdcture he plays the part of a young engineer who falls in love with a Swedish farm girl who happens upon his mountain cabin while fleeing from an unwelcome marriage bargain. Dramatic Plot The story concerns the Swedish girl's fight against overwbelming odds for a life of decency. Staying at the lodge with the young engineer she falls in love. When he leaves to go to his home on business, intending to return and marry her, the girl is discovered by her uncle. Again she escapes joining a eheap carnival troupe as a dancing girl. Here the engineer finds her, but learning that she has become the mistress of the troupe's manager, he casts her aside. They meet again when the girl, now a reigning demimondaine, is installed in a lavish New j York pent-house provided by a poli- I tical leader. I From this point of action the story is .carried to San Francisco and then to the island of Java, where the clim- ? I ax takes place. 1 Pvliss Garbo is supported by a large : cast, including Jean Hersholt, John j Miljan, Alan Hale, Hale Hamilton, j Hilda Yaughn, Ruseell Simpson, ' Cecil Cunningham and Ian Keith.
