MANY BOXING DAY FIXTURES
"Canard")
CHANCES OF TOP WEIGHTS IN AUCKLAND CUP AND RAILWAY TEELS AND GOLDEN WINGS MAY BEAR OFF PRIZES i
(Notes bv
With raeing at Ellerslie, Awapuni, Dunedin, New Plymouth, j Pirongia, Waipukurau, Hokitika and Gisborne on Boxing Day j sportsmen have plenty of choiee in their fancies and providing the weather keeps fine there should he a real holiday spirit about the gatherings. "Canard" desires to wish his readers a Happy Christmas and a profitable Boxing Day with good finishes and equally good dividends.
Chief interest in this distriet as usual will be taken in the Ellerslie fixture, the minor events of which were dealt with yesterday, and of all the racing in the Dominion the Auckland Cup and Railway double is most keenly debated. There are 16 left in. the Cup at the time of writing and this allows for Gay Idea who has been purchased by Lou James, of Turua from Mrs. Powell, starting. Lou also owns Free Air. The top-weight Concentrate h'as undeniable qualifications as a stayer, for he has won the Cup previously and has also been placed. He has earned his burden and his chance is good. W eather conditions do not trouhle him, Gay Crest who has already been first to finish in the race but was outed for boring has had an interrupted preparation, and this will not be in his favour but he is genuine and if right will be hard. He is coupled with Tout le Monde and this bracket is sure to command a lot of support particularly as the lightweiglit is showing signs of sticking on in his work. ! Fast Passage who won the New Zealand Cup in a race record by six lengths is a fine mara, a proven stayer, but has been under suspicion for a tender suspensory ligament and that militates against her chaives for the pace is sure to be a cracker with several fast lightweights to make it so. Given soundness she should be in the firing line. Antique is very well indeed but has not gone over more than 12 furlongs and though he is a fit horse he has enough to hump with 8.10 over two miles. Jaloux is likely to beat more than beat him. He has given every sign of staying and he is said to be sound. His trainer makes no secret of the fact that he expects to win ana he is no mug judge. Jaloux appeals to "Canard" most in the midale division. Great Star is going to start and his party are confident. His best peri'ormances have been over shorter distances so far. Still he is as game as a pebble. Royal Artist has come into promInence since his Mitchelson Cup win i;ut that was over 12 furlongs and uhough be inherits stamina from his oam's side (Oddity) yet none of the Leightons have yet proved equal to avo mile races. Ilowever he is a ball of muscle and Dick Reid thinks the take is his already. He certainly is iikely to be hard for he races easily and does not knoek himself about hy pulling. Great Emblem has staying blood in iiis pedigree being a descendant of Ladas who did so well for the Duke oi' Portland. However a win for him in this company would certainly be a surprise. Speedmint does not appeal for she had an interruption in her training and on her Waipa form could hardly be considered seriously unless there is a remarkable reversal of form. Gay Idea has done nothing to suggest a win. Gold Trail though she was fourth at Waipa does not appeal as a twomiler and is more likely to take on the Christmas Handicap.
Tigerism comes from a shrewd stable and after his Marton win it is not likely that "Addie" Lisle would keep him in the Cup without some reason. If there is an upset it may come from him. Red Sun appears to have trained off and ran too badly at Te Awamutu 1 for one to reeommend him with confidencej It is in his favour that he has one pace and stays at it all the time. Knight of Australia has really done nothing to suggest that he can win. He is certainly a fine horse and as he is privately trained little is known of his real ability. Finally comes Teels and this mare is due for very serious consideration. Slie won at Waipa and won handsomely with good stuff behind her. By Lord Quex — Lovematch" her mother was a real stayer and she is 'every bit as good as Motere who beat Gay Crest in the race on a protest. Teels is following the same way as Motere her brother and she should be one of the hardest to beat. Summed up the best liked are Concentrate, 'Fast Pas?$ige, Jaloux, Royal Artist, Tigerism and Teels, and the final choice
TEELS JALOUX CONCENTRATE AUCKLAND CUP. Two miles.— Concentrate 9.3, Gay Crest 9.2, Fast Passage 9.2, Antique 8.10, Jaloux 7.8, Great Star 7.4, Royal Artist 7.3, Tout le Mond 7.0, Great Emblem 7.0, Speedmint 7.0, Gold Trail 7.0, Tigerism 7.0, R'edi Sun 7.0, Knight of Australia 7.0, Teels 7.0, Gay Idea 7.0. The Railway is the smallest and poorest field for years and only a dozen are carded of whom All Supreme will be absent. Cadland has the top weight with Golden Wings and the Taranaki sprinter is very solid. The small field will he to his advantage and he will be well baeked. Golden Wings is brilliant and a good beginner and this tshould he much use to him, He will sti'ip a very fit horse and what beats him should win. Tea Trader is heavily faneied hut "Canard" has against him that he does not relish the Ellerslie way of galioping and may ruh wide. This, in a race where no time can he wasted, militates against his chances. Also
will keep -him busy all the way. Sunny Sky has. not been heard of much since her trip to Aus'sie hut according to reports she is very fit. If that is the case she will be hard to head off for though most of her wins are over lo'nger distances she has 1.12 1-5 against her name. j All Humbug despite his dual Waipa I win may not be the class. The Quorn is a half brother to Nancy Lee who won a few years ago and he performed so well at Riccarton that he is well in the hunt. Greek Gold and Exaggeration are coupled on the maehine and as Greek Gold is a had roarer he may be left out of calculations except as a second string. Exag'gerfation jon the other hand is rapidly i'mproving and might give cheek if anything gets left. He is a good beginner. Azalea is in the Queen's Plate and is better suited there. Grand Sport is practieally unknown and seems to be quite out of his class. Unless he has shown something phenomenal in private it is hard to see why he has been left in. When all .is summed up the main ones likely to get support are Cadland, Golden Wings, Sunny Sky, Tea Trader, The Quorn and the Exaggera-tion-Greek Gold bracket. Probably the best of these are GOLDEN WINGS SUNNY SKY THE QUORN from: — (RAILWAY HANDICAP. Six furlongs. — Cadland 9.9, Golden Wings 9.9, Tea Trader 8.6, Sunny Sky 8.3, Silver Ring 7.11, All Humbug 7.8, The Quorn 7.6, Greek Gold 7.3, Exaggeration 7.2, Azalea 7.0, Grand Sport 7.0, All Supreme 7.0.
