LIVED FOR ADVENTURE

MURDER ENDS CAREER OF ADVENTUROUS VOYAGER Captain Wanderwell, the wealthy yacht owner and adventurer who was murdered last weelc in his yacht at Los Angeles, was one of the most picturesque characters in the_ South Seas, according to Mr. T. L. Richards of Sydney, co-author of the book "White Man, Brown Women. Richards and his companions were 15 years ago in the Australi Islands, in the Pacific. Richards was super-cai-go in a trading schooner and Wanderwell, then under another narne •entertained him on his schooner Lulualu, an exceedingly fast vessel. Richards and his companion were amazed at the furnishings of the schooner. The huge saloon was magnificent with rare Chinese tapesti'y. Beautiful carpets covered in quaint patterns, and the dinner services were

of finest china. Wanderwell was a kind of "Bully Hayes" — he would do anything venturesome, Mr. Richards recalled. It was asserted that he raided the Aeon when she was wreclced on Christmas Island and he attempted to raid the Maitai when she was wrecked at tRaratonga. He was also suspected of running cocaine to the Chinese in Hawaii. During the wai" he raided the British coal depot on Suwarrow Island, and he was suspected of keeping von Spee's squadron posted with the movements of the British warships, for he was German born. A tall dark handsome man, he lived for adventure. His second wife, Ailoha, was a Deautiful Hawaiian, who dressed beautifully in European cloths. She accompanied her husband on his schooner on most of his voy•ages.
