COUNTY COUNCIL

Our District Representative).

ENGINEER REPORTS TO WEDNESDAY'S MEETING MAINTENANCE REDUCTION

(From r

The following report of work undertaken since the last meeting was presented to the Opotiki County Council on Wednesday by the County Engineer, Mr. W. W. Upton. Moody's Track, Upper Waioeka "The widening- of this track is being carried out with relief labour, but owing to the money allotment being so small the work will take a long time to complete. There are only three men working on it and their allotment is 15 days per week. About 40 chains have been widened to a width of 9 to 10 feet. There now remains about 16 chains to do and two culverts to be put in. The formation yet to be done is principally rock and fairly heavy siding. I estimate that it will cost about £140 to widen the rest to 10 feet. Irvine's Road, Woodland, s "Referring to the request to the council asking that a portion of the road be metalled, the length of the piece from Grevaes and Pile's cow - shed to their paddock gate ,is 13 chains. Of this the upper 6 chains would probably cut up more than the lower piece. There is a gravel deposit about half a mile along the road which, although not of the best quality would probably be suitable. The eost of the gravelling would be about £3 per chain, but this cost might be reduced somewhat if unemployed labour were used to quarry and help load the gravel. Main and- Secondary Highways "The amount voted hy tha main highways board for maintenance for Ihe pa-esent year was cut down considerably and maintenance costs have rad to be reduced. As nine months of the year*- have now gone, the cost shows that the maintenance will be > just about within the amount availahle and nothing to spare. General Work "The bridge near Small's on the Waiotahi Road has been repaired. "Maintenance gravelling has been done on the Waiotahi, Kutarere, Otara, Waiawa and Waioeka roads. "Graders bave worked on the highways, Otara, Upper Otara, Waioeka, and Woodlands Roads.
