Value of Examinations.
The value and the purpose of examinations are always questioned at this time of year, especially so now that the passing of an examination does not open wide the door to employment. The question whether an examination is an academic hurdle to be taken in one's stride or merely a marlc of attainment to impress wouldbe employers, has not yet been answered, but whatever the cause there is certainly a tendency to regard the passing of examinations as the sole object of education and not as an episode in the search for knowledge. English schools have been charged with being "examination mad," but New Zealand schools have a fuller claim to such' a title, for here the passing of examinations seems to be a matter of feverish concern and herce cramming. Another Potato Pest. A new affliction of potatoes in South Taranaki has been noted by a Hawera resident. It is a bacterial wilt known as b'lack-leg and it is believed there is no method of control. Seed from infected plants should never be used.
