A MERRY CHRISTMAS

MARY

ANNE'.

A Merry Christmas everybody, and I sincerely hope it will be a merry one. Judging from all we hear about the numerous exciting things that are going to take plaea this week Rotorua promises to be decidedly gay, doesn't it? Although lots of the residents are leaving this week on holiday bent, still more have chosen a visit to Rotorua for the Christmas jollification. The smell of Christmas cakes and the gurgling of boiling plum puddings all contribute to the air of festivity and goodwill that surrounds this season of the year. In fact, Christmas week is one wild happy rush — full of parcel-packing and holiday plans. Most of us are nomads at heart, I believe — conventional life tries its utmost to suppress it and too often it . suceeds, and especially at this season does the tantalising view of the road winding over a distant hill " extendj a persuasive means to the sparkling coolness of the sea. We yearn to — metaphorically speaking — throw our bonnet over the nearest windmill and take a flying leap after it. I dare say it is the holiday spdrit in the air that affects us — the call of the breakers is too much for us and we must 'go. During the last week or so, Father Christmas has been very busy keeping his appointments at the various parties held in his honour and his ruddy demeanour of happiness and goodwill brings to us still more the message of Yuletide. As each year draws to a close there is always a certain amount of antieipation of what the next one holds in stone and when we wish "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" let us hope 1933 will see the alleviation in no small measure of all the distressing things that come under the heading of depression. And so may I in my turn wish you all "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
