LOCAL AND GENERAL

Bcwler Honoured In appreciation of the outstanding performance of J. Hinton in 'takingfive successive Bay of Plenty batsmen's wickets with the same number of deliveries at Whakatane during the last week-end, the Rotorua Cficket Association decided on Monday evening to mount the ball which was presented to him by the Bay captain after the match. Cricket Fixtures The following fixtures for McLean Cup matches to commence on Saturday January 14 were arranged by the Rotorua Cricket Association on Mond,ay evening. Clty V Alhion, ground to be arranged; Ngongotaha v, Old Boys, Governmfent Gtound; High School A v. High School B, date to be arranged. Railway Reserve The general committee of the Rotorua Agricultural and Pastoral Association decided on lvlonday evening to make application for the use.or lease of the railway reserve adjoining its property in, Fenton Street. Invitation to Minister f On being informed of the inability of the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe to officially open the new sh'ow building of the Rotorua A. and P. Association at the commencement ?of the next show in May, 1933, the general committee decided on Monday evening to invite the Minister of Lands, Hon. E. A. Ransom, to perform the ceremony. Tidyingf the Lake Front. The Borough staff are busy tidying up the Lake Front Reserve and have commenced cutting the grass all along the drive. This will, in addition to providing a possible hay-crop do lnuch to tidy up the outlook. An Improvement Needed. It would probably give visiting motorists a much better opinion of Rotorua if the surface of the road leading from the Ohinemutu corner past Lake House to Tutanekai Street were put into better condition. At present it is full of corrugations. Christmas Amusements Residents and visitors to Rotorua this Christmas will he provided for by the latest riding devices. Amusements Ltd., will present their latest and new Merry-go-Round; also the thrill of thrills, an aeroplane riding device, which will be one of tha big attractions this Christmas, also games etc. Roll along and enjoy yourself. Streets Becoming Busy Particularly during yesterday afternoon, the Rotorua streets bore a busy appearance. One noticeable thing was the fact that many of the visitors engaged in shopping came from the country. Another noticeable feature was the number of antique cars on th-e roads evidently pressed into service to bring the family into town for the Christmas shopping. Some were of a very rare old vintage. Blight Attacking Watitle It is noticeable that in the Arikikapakapa reserve a number of the wattle trees growing* there seem to be attacked by a similar fungoid blight to that which wi-ought such havoc in the wattle plantations at Te Kauwhata and which ended in their total •destruction. Benefit Picture. The amount received by the Roto- - rua Rotary Club from the entertainment arranged at the Majestic Theatre on Sunday evening amounted to £21/8/6. This will provide approximately 42 families with Christmas Cheer. The warmest appreciation is due to Mr. A. J. Macdermott for his kindness in allowing the use of the theatre for this purpose at a sacrifice to himself, as the h'olding of an additional entertainment during the weel? meant a considerable drop in the attendance on other evenings. The club further wish to pay tribute to the assistance given by the Rotorua Morning- Post for publicity, to Messrs. G, 'W. Vaughan Ltd. for their generosity in supplying meat at cost price, to Mr. Johnson of Arawa Stores for supplying groceries at cost price and arranging for the delivery of the ( parcels. The Rotary Club desire to make it known that the amount raised is by no means sufficient to provide for all those families who are in want. The Rotorua Women's Club is endeavouring to arrange to supplement this fund and asks the public to give every support to its effort in this direction. The Right Spirit. There are contrasts in the way business men in Rotorua look upon the holiday season. Yesterday there was one such brought before the notice of a "Morning Post" representative. One man asked how things were going assumed a mournful aspeet and moaned that "they are nothing as good as they were ten years ago," and proceeded to demonstrate to his own (but not to his hearer's) satisfaction that it "was going to be a bad Christmas," "money was short" and "the tourists weren't spending like they used to." This dismal Jimmy was in the middle of his diatribe when another business man came up. He heard the tail-end and with a beaming smile remarked "Well, so-and-so, I have just come away from your shop. It's full and your staff is going eyes out. Even if your prices are a bit stiff you haven't got much to grumble at. I can remember that the ten years ago you tallc of you said exactly the same thing. It's fellows like you who drive trade away. For Heaven's sake if you can't smile make a f ace; like it." And so a lifelong acquaintanceship has terminated.
