Rec. Dec. 17. Sydney, Dec. 16. The Heralds' C-anberra correspondent says the action of the Ne-vy Zealand Government in imposing prohibition on the importation of fresh fruit and vegetables from Australia is likely to cause serious concern to the Commonwealth. The opinion in afficial circles u is that the action has been taken in an endeavour to ohtain the removal of the Australian prohibition on fruit from New Zealand. It is understood that the New Zealand Government which has been diseussing the matter with the Commonwealth Government for months, made strong representations for lifting the embargo and even hinted it is believed, at retaliatory action. The federal offieers emphasise that Australia is most willing to meet New Zealand's request if it is possihle to do so. The Direetor-General of Health, Dr. Cumpston, stated that the New Zealand authorities had shown themselves to be under the impression that the embargo was being perpetuated for economic reasons, but the prohibition was imposed and is being continued solely with the object of preventing fireblight. •
