THE OFFKTAL PROGRAMME The full carnival programme shows that the week is to be erammed with 1 enjoyment and it will be strange, in- ! deed, if visitors this year find them--elves f'aced with a single hour of dull timo. Preparations for the carnival are proceeding apace and there should ! ur.cloubtedly be "a gay time in the old j town" every night of the week in | nddition to the day-time attractions. ] The streets will be gaily illuminated j and speeial efforts have been made ' thi.s year to provide plenty of music. I in addition to the local junior and J senior bands, the Auckland Waterside 1 Workers' Band has been engaged and j there 110 doubt whatever that this | reinforcement of the musical section i will be thoroughly appreciated. There will be both indoor and outdoor enter- ■ taimnents and the Town Square, in its pieturesque setting, will again be the centre of attraction for some fine I performanees. | The programme for the week will | open on Christmas night with a conij blned hand and Maori Choir concert in the Town Square, where the big plati'orm has already been erected and vviring is in progress to brighton up h ■ tvli.de scene with a hlaze of coloured el etric light. On Boxing Night the Town Square will again be occupied by an entertainment of a dilferent character There will be plenty of music and singing, and King Carnival will be vrowned amid the blaring of trumpets the roll of drums and cheers of his suhject at 8.30. By this time high t-ar-fival will be well and truly launched upon its hilarious career, and woe l>etide the individual found with a d; leful countenance hetween then and the closing scer.es on New Year's Ev(?. On the evoning of Tuesday, I)ecemher 27, the beautiful new Blue Bath in the Government Gardens will he opened by a swimming carnival. Bands will be in attendance and the gathering promises to be oue of exceptional animation. Apart from the good programme of sports arranged, the new bath should, in itself, be a groat attraction to visitors. It is well worthy to he looked upon as the star of the health resort, and is as good as anything existing in the Southern Hemisphere. The water of the bath is lit up by submerged lights and the blaze of coloured elec- ( tric festoons overhead will contribute to make a scene of rare beauty. On the following Wednesday night the bands will combine to give a fine concert in the Town Squarcf and the Young Australia League has booked the Lyric Theatre for one of their at-ti-active entertainments. No douht the hoys will get a warm welcome. On Thursday night there will he a great riot of fun at the fancy dress hall in Sylvana Caharet. In past years this fixture has been the star feature of the carnival, espeeially for the young people, and there should he no exception to the rule this time. Plxcellent dance music will he provided and visitors are strongly advised to put a fancy costume of some sort in their kithag for the oceasion. It will be a jolly time and many unique characters are certain to be represented. A grand Maori Concert and Hangi in the Town Square on Friday night should make a strong appeal to visitors. The Maori Choirs in Rotorua have some really beautiful voices and the exquisite harmony of their partsing'ing is something to be long remembered. The hangi, or feast, is sure to cause much merriment. The Maoris will cook pork, lcumeras, potatoca and other delicacies in true native fashion right in the Square and serve it out in specially made flax baskets at the close of the concert programme. Saturday will see the conclusion of the week's festivities with the usual fancy dress competitions and processions tenninating at the Town Square. The children's session will commence in the afternoon at 2.30 o'clock, when the judging will be carried out. The motor and other vehicles will parade at 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., and the prizes will be awarded before the carnival closes at midnight. Apart from these ofiicial entertainments, there will, of eourse, be high tide at the picture theatres and dance 1 halls. .
