Rec. Dec. 16, 8.50 p.m. Tokio, Dec. 16. An enormous eight storey department store in Shirolcaya, Tokio, was gutted by fire. The fire began on the third floor at nine in the morning, and spread rapidly, the celluloid Christmas decorations helping the flames. Five hundred customers, mostly women and children, and 1300 employees were entrapped. Many jumped to death. One hundred and ten were taken to hospital, seven being dead already. It is feared that the death roll will be very heavy.
