"Punch's" famous "advice to those about to marry" was "Don't." R. L. Stevenson's advice to ladies contemplating matrimony was "never marry a nonsmoker." Charles Reade, the novelist, , who flourished before cocktails, night j cluhs, votes for women and the intellect- j ual superiority of the "softer sex" were ! invented counselled ladies to encourage their husbands and fiances to smoke all they wanted to.' Daring advice at a time when women hadn't learned to smoke and hated — or said they hated — tobacco. Ah, well, tlie world grows wiser every day! And it is becoming generally recognised : that, given the right baccy, smoking, so j far from proving harmful, is often posi- j tively benefieial. Unfortunately, however, | the l'ight baccy is not so common as it ! should be — save in New Zealand. There j are four brands: Navy Cut No. 3, Cav- . endish, Riverhead Gold, and Cut Plug No. 10. Not one of them contain any nico-.; tine worth mentioning; all are famous for : their splendid quality. They are toasted! — and cjuite harmless. They don't affect he^rt or throat and are as pure as they are delicious.
