Preparing Cauiping Ground In preparation for the many motorists who will utilise the borough eamping gronnd in Ranolf Street during ] the Christmas and New Year holiday period, Rotorua Borough Council workmen have been hnsily engaged during the past week in cutting the long grass in the area and generally tidying the reservev Damaging Roads In reply to a letter from the engineer of the Rotorua County Council to the Fields Superintendent,. Department of Agriculture, Auckland, complaining of the damage cansed to roads in the Ngakuru block by the use of sledges hy the department, the council was advised at its meeting on j Monday that the use of such transport had now been prohibited.
TactfuIIy Handled When the case, poliee v. Ben Huriwaka was called in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Mr M. H. Hampson informed the hench that both families desired to express their appreciation of the way the Magistrate, Mr. S. L. Faterson, had handled the case. The case against Huriwaka was dismissed on payment of 19s 6d costs as he had taken out a prohibition order.
Relief Workers' Pay At the meeting of the Rotorua County Council held on Monday, Cr. A. L. Keith moved that the council urge that relief workers in the Rotorua district be paid the full two weeks' Christmas pay notwithstanding the interruption of the ordinary stand-down week within the period. The motion was adopted by the council.

Relief Work on Farms In a circular letter from the Commissioner of Unemployment received hy the Rotorua County Council at its meeting on Monday, the council was advised that after Deeember 31 next, relief work under No. 5 Seh'eme will not he available to persons in oecupation of farm lands, irrespective of whether the land is in the name of the farmer or his wife. The board will however, he prepared to consider appllcations for assistance un- | der Schemc 4A for work on his own I property.
Whaka School Fete A garden fete to provide funds for school purposes was held at the Whakarewarewa Primary School on Monday afternoon, a large attendance of parents and friends being present. Several stalls stocked with novelties of all deseriptions were arranged round the school playground and good business was done by the willing helpers. Early in the afternoon an enjoyable programme of song and elocutionary items was given by the children in the classroom, the performance being of a high standard.
Holiday Greetings At the conclusion of the sitting of" the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr. W. A. Carter, on behalf of the Bar wished the Magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., the compliments of the season. They had had, said Mr. Carter, some very enjoyable times in the court and he wished the bench to know how approaehable and sympathetic the Bar found him; the Bar wished him to realise the respect in whfch he was held. In response Mr. Paterson remarked that the past year had not been very suceessful from the Bar's point of view and he trusted that there were better hopes for the future. He reciprocated the Bar's good wishes. Similar courtesies were extended to the stafi; and the police.
Providing Christmas Cheer On Sunday next, Deeember 19, at 8.30 p.m., a motion picture entertainment will be screened at the Majestic Theatre, the proceeds of which will be used to provide Christmas hampers for as many of those in need as it is possible to provide for. The entertainment has been organised by the Rotary Club. The club, with the assistance of Mr. A. J. Macdermott, manager of the Majestic Theatre, has been suceessful in securing a fine film entitled "The Magnificent Lie," featuring Ruth Chatterton. The supporting programme will inelude sevi eral gazettes. The prices to . be charged are 1/6 circle, 1/- stalls. The seats may be reserved in the circle only without further charge — no tax is payable. Display of Furs An extensive variety of high class fur coats, stoles, chokers, sets and rugs are at present being displayed at Heywood and Amson's Auction Mart, Tutanekai Street, and will be on sale every day this week at greatly reduced prices. The furs are the produet of the National Fur Coy., Auckland, a written guarantee being given to the purchaser by this firm which guarantees the life of its goods up to 10 years. On Saturday the display will definitely conclude with an auction sale of remaining stoclc*
