EMFIRE MIGRATION

(Press. Assn.'

HOPES OF REVSVAL DOMINIONS AT PRESENT UNABLE TO TAKE ADDITIONS DEBATE IN COMMONS

— By Telegrapli — Conyriglit).

Rec. Dec. 8, 7.0 p.m. London, Dee. 7. A brief debate on migration was raised on the motion of Sir Shirley Benz, urg'ing* the Govei'nment to secure the co-operation of the Dominions in migration. He thouglit the time opportune to press the subject of his reply . Mr. A. A. Somerville (Conservative) soconding the motion, suggested that a board of business men should survey Entpire opportunities. He himself favoured ehartered companies with Govei'nment guarantees. Captain F. E. Guest (Conservative) advoeated mass migration of Empire communities under the supervision of the State until the migrants had settled in their surroundings. Mr. J. H. Thomas, Secretary of State for the Dominions, said that i he was in general agreement -with the present motion. It was true that the Empire sjiirit was not lacking today. There had never been below 50,000 people ready and anxious to go overseas, but the Dominions had the same problem of unemployment as England. Nothing was more ridiculous than to send people there at present, but the machinery was to be kept ready. He believed that there were 32 societies for the purpose of migration. He was not sure that they could more efi'ectively work us one, if organised. He hoped that the time was not fnr distant when the Dominions would be nble to weleome these l-eople.
