FREER SPENDING

C. J.

TUCK.

•{To the Edltor). Sir, — Your leader this morning is timely and to the point; if everyone would only realise that it is the spender (judicious if you like), but still ihe spender, who makes the wheel of industry go round it would be bettci for ail* and it is a pity our unemployment boards and the Government could not get that idea into their heads just now. Their latest edict to give rural unemployed one week's sustenance instead of two as in the metropolitan areas is a case in point. How do they hope or expect people to remain what we call respectable on a pittance that is nothing more or less than conducive to rebeilion or dishonesty. It is not for want of funds, as according to "Hansard" there are ample funds. But retaining tliose funds to pay retaining fees to already well endowed superannuated men is not going to ease the task of the relief men in paying their way or conducive to contentment. Why not give all ihose unfortunates out of woi-k something to spend. The rural unemployed wrill lose one week, either before or after New Year, which means that they do not get any sustenance for two weeks. Nice Christmas cheer and good will to all men. No wonder people flock to the towns. The acting employment Minister says that the local relief board can give extra sustenance pay if they wish. Let us hope they do so. We are all being advised to spend — well let those in control of money set the ball rolling. It would be the most profitable act they ever did. Idleness with sufiicient money for food is tolerable, but idleness without money is intolerable and deplorable in a land of- plenty. — I am, etc.
