RELIEF COMMITTEES MAY ADVANCE STANDDOWN WEEK STATEMENT BY MINISTER

Wellington, Tuesday. The position of relief workers whosa . standdown week occurs during" the' Christmas period when a i'ortnight's p-ay without work is to he igranted was raised in the House of 'Representatives hy Rev. Clyde Carr (Labour, Timaru), Who asked if arrangements could he made foi* these men to get the full value of the gratuity. The acting-Minister of Employment (Hon. Adg,m Hamilton) said that to make such an arrangement, would giye some of the relief workers an advantage over others. It Would alsq require an increased allocation. It would be possible, however, for arrangements to be made for the men to advancei their standdown week hy a week so that they would get the benefit of the gratuity. Mr. Carr: Will the Minister, do that? The Minister: Local eommittees cap do it themselves. Replving to Mr. M, J. Savage (Lah. Auckland West) who asked whether special rations and an allowance would he given to men who came home from the camps at Christmas, the Minister said that relief workers Who went home would receive the same pay as though they had xemained working in camp. Mr. Savage: They are eating their own rations. Will any rations allowance be made to those who go to their own homes. Th'e Minister: We cannot make any such allowance for them.
