BIG SCHEME

RAILWAY TO OPEN UP THE NORTHERN TERRITORY Canberra, Dec. 5. The Federal Ministry has a proposal under consideration for building a railway from Bourke, New South Wales, through a portion of Queensland and Northern Territory to Port Darwin. It is understood that a British and local syndicate is prepared to undertake the construction, providing the Government grants the leasehold and also the freehold rights over enormous grazing land in the Northern Territory, and a 99 years' lease of Bathurst or Melville's Island. It is estimated that the cost of the line will be £15,000,000.
