WAIKATO TROTS

• "Misere.")

FORM REVIEWED GOOD FIELD S ENGAGED FOR CLAUDELANDS TO-DAY BRENTLIGHT'S TWO CHANCES

(Notes by

Nice fields are carded for the Waikato trots at Claudelands to-day and there should be some fine racing. This affords a few horses the ehance of qualifying for the Auckland Trotting Cup and other events at the forthcoming Auckland Trotting Club fixture during the big city racing and trotting carnival lasting from December 26 to January 3. and comprising four days racing and three days trotting. The two biggest fields are in the two opening events, after which there is a general thinning out of the likely number of competitors. In the first race, the Improvers' Handicap, Nell Volo, Tiwha, Mattie Herbilwyn, Manna's Son and Indolent read as well as anything else, while in the Progressive Handicap there will be plenijy of support for Cimmarrori, Lislea, Pedlar, Mazda, Raider, and Taniwha. Both these are open affairs.

The Big ltace Most important event on the card is the-third race, the Waikato Handicap, and it is a pity that there are not more than six horses engaged, hut they are a very even sextet and should furnish an attractive contest. Four of them are also in the sprint, the final event of the day, so that their earlier running will be closely watched hy those! eager to solve the sprint prohlem. There is no horse on the limit, but Brentlight is haclc one second on his own. If he gets away from the barrier all right Brentlight is going to take some catching, for his form over the last few months in the province has been most consistent, Brent Zolock gave Epsom patrons a taste of his great speed at the last meeting held there. for he spreadeagled a fine field of sprinters. He should be able to stay the two miles all right, his trouble being a liability to stand on the mark. With this pacer going off right he will see that they go fast. Dan Direct won his only two mile race last season on this track, and he is on the improve. On the second day of the Auckland spring meeting he made a hrave showing in the handicap, being right up with the leaders at the home turn, and then he faded out of the contest. Now he will be more forward in condition, and bearing in mind his previous good form on this course he cannot be entirely overlooked. Sprinter or Stayer? Little Guy was in rare sprinting form at the winter and spring meetings at Epsom, and now he is baclc to a journey once more. There is no reason why he should not stay with the best, for he is in most capable hands and with his great speed and in a race that may not be run very fast he ought to be handy all the way. He too is a bii "iffy" at the tapes, yet he is a distinct possibility. Te Wahia has not shown much form of late, although he would not be left in the Waikato Handicap un7 less he was progressing in his workouts. The field is completed by First Flight, who is the only one in the race qualified for the Auckland Cup without giving away time. This pacer's efforts at the Auckland spring meeting were good as far as they went, but she did not run her two races alilce and failed just when it was expected that she would show them how it is done. First Flight should not he dismissed because of this, for she is always a possibility and it is in her favour that she can handle all sorts of eonditions under foot. Summed up, Brentlight reads the best, while it is difficult to separate First Flight, Little Guy and Dan ' Direct. This is the last opportunity for these horses to run prior to the Auckland meeting so it is expected that they will make the most of their ehance.

Her Pet Trip Homeward has run some of her best races over a mile and a quarter, and the Mangere pacer reads best of those left in the Raglan Handicap, with Some Dillon, Native Berry and Rey de Quest also likely to offer opposition on this trip. Most of those in the Members' Handicap will have been seen in action earlier in the day so that the latest form may prove the best guide. Apart from this, Guid Hairst, Lady Amanda, Pedlar, Lislea, Taniwha and Roylette have chances. There is a hracket of three in this event. Lislea, Taniwha and Lady Amanda.

The trotters' race, the Waipa Handicap, should he an interesting contest, in which there will be keen support for Parish Belle, Carl Mack, Mattie Herbilwyn and Nelson Girl, and of these Carl Mack, if he trots as well as he did at the last meeting, will take all sorts of beating. Some Dillon, Native Berry. Guid Hairst and Lady Coronado read the best of those engaged in the Dominion Handicap, the slow two-miler. A Smart Quartefi The meeting closes with the Farewell Handicap, the big sprint, which has a nice field. Brent Zolock stands right out, always provided that he gets away with his opponents. Brent light is useful and he too| will go a merry mile and a quarter and this one may be a bit more reliable at the post than the southern speed merchant. Our Peter and Dan Direct are next best fancied. This quartet should fight out the issue from barrier to judge, with the final vote cast in favour of the consistent Brentlight. Summed up, the following may do best: — 11.45 — Improvers' Handicap: Nell Volo, Tiwha, Mattie Herbilwyn. 12.30 — Progressive Handicap: Lis-lea-Taniwha bracket, Raider, Mazda. 1.15 — Waikato Handicap: Brentlight, First Flight, Little Guy. 2.0 — Raglan Handicap: Homeward, Some Dillon, Cleao. 2.45— Members' Handicap: Lis-lea-Taniwha-Lady Amanda hracket Raider, Guid Hairst. 3.30— -Waipa Handicap: Carl Mack, Parrish Belle, Mattie Herbilwyn. - 4.15 — Dominion Handicap. Some Dillon, Native Berry, Lady Coronado. .
