Band at Oliinemutu ■: Commencing at 3 p.m. to-morrow afternoon (Sunday) the Rotorua Municipal Band will play selections in the open air at Ohinemutu. The Carnival Preparations are already in progress for the Christmas Carnival. Workmen have eommenced to tidy up and put the town square in order ijor the programme fixtures. Cutting Grass Borough workmen are at present busily engaged cutting the long grass on the street frontages. It is understood that once the streets in the central area have been eut the grass will be lcept short by regular periodical mowings. • Maori Carvings The Rotorua Maori Arts and Crafts School has now completed all the carvings for the Otaki Meeting House. They v/ill be shipped as soon as instructions are received from the Minister for Native Affairs. ^
Interested Visitors Among the visitors to the Maori Arts and Crafts School at Ohinemutu during the past month have been Lady Grovsvenor of London,- Mr T. Heberly, of Dominion Museum, and Mr. Chappie'Hall, who has been engaged on carving work for both Auckland and Otago museums. Fishing Reports Fishing reports during the 4 past week include a fine -81b. trout caught by Major Oliver at Lake Rotoehu and a large catch of 41 secured by a party trolling from the launch Whizz Bang on Lake Taupo. All the fish were in exeellent condition. Butter Factory Burned The old brick butter factory at Eureka was completely gutted by fire in the early hours of Thursday morning. A bucket brigade did good work in saving- the adjoining cheese factory. Twenty years ago the original wooden factory was also destroyed by fire. Coins Unearthed While engaged in demolition work on the Old Blue Bath building in the Government Grounds quantities of old coins have been found by the workmen engaged. The coins have been found in various state of preservation and included silver and copper, it being noted that" the latter have suffered deterioration from the sulphur deposits to a greater extent than the larger denomination. Boy Scouts' Benefit Dance No. 1 Troop of Rotorua Boy Scouts assisted by the St. Faith's Ladies' committee, will hold a monster dance and 500 tournament in the 'Ohinemutu Maori Meeting house, Thursday next, December 8, is the date to remember. Competitions and games will be held, for which a collection of splendid pi'izes will be offered. The committee is also arranging- for a knife and fork supper. All proceeds are to be devoted to the scouts' camp fund. The scouts are always prepared to help others at all times. Residents are now given an opportunity to help the scouts prepare for their camp at Maketu in January next. Conditions Improving A report received from the King George V. Hospital last evening concerning Mr. Alex Geard, who suffered back injuries as the result of his being erushed between two logs at the timber mills at Ngongotaha last Wednesday, was very reassuring and stated that the patient's condition was showing mueh improvement. To-day's Sports Great interest is being taken in the sports meeting of the Ngongotaha Amateur Sports Club which will he held on the Ngongotaha Reserve to-day, commencing at 11.30 a.m., and it is expected that there will be a lai'ge attendance of competitors and spectators from the surrounding districts. A comprehensive programme of events to interest all classes of likely competitors has been arranged and for each event trophies of considerable value have been allocated. Events which should prove particularly interesting are the two chops, the men's and ladies' hunter events, the tug-of-war on horses and the hurdling events. The track events will also be closely followed.
