TRANSPORT LICENSES

[ NO. THREE AUTHORITY ! APPLICATIONS HEARD FOR VARIATIONS OF SERVICES EXTRA CARS ALLOWED A sitting of the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority was opened in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Mr. E. Walton' presided with Mr. J. Farrell and Mr. J. Cliff-Mc-Cullough. K. Motoi'Sj Ltd., applied for an amendment of the classifieation of the vehicles used upon the RotoruaHamilton service from A and B to A to E. . The Railway Department pointed out that an extra service had recently been granted on this route and that .there were four trips daily made by A to B vehicles; these with the train services should be quite sufficient without allowing the use of heavier vehicles. The application was, therefore, opposed. Mr. Harnpson appeared for the applicant company and Mr. Roe watched the proceedings on behalf of Newby's MotorsAppreciating the viewpoint of the Railway Department Mr, Harnpson said the applicant was prepared to meet the objections by cutting out the 10.30 a.m. run on Sunday if given the right to use two more class A to B cars" on Sunday afternoon. This would mean that no extra ears would be placed on the road. Mr. Roe objected to the application as it now appeared. He desired the propose.d curtailment brought under Mr. Newby's notice, before agreeing to the alteration. K Motors knew what they wanted when application was first made for the lieense. A. Kusabs, director of K Motors, Ltd-, said they had difficulty in providing accommodation on the 3.30 Sunday afternoon run, and had boen j compelled to turn some away. He merely wished to remove the two cars from the morning to the afternoon service when the traffic was heaviest. Mr. Newby's car only provided trivial assistance in the afternoon. G. Haymes, transport manager of K Motors, said on three or four occasions since May they had had to turn* down passengers in the afternoon. He had no definite evidence in support of this statement. In making the application they were look-ng ahead to Christmas traffic. Mr. Roe again urged that Mr. Newby should be heard before the matter was decided. He, therefore, suggested an adjournment and that further notice should be given of the proposed amendment of the lieense- • Mr. Harnpson pointed out that the amendment suggested was merely an alternative which the authority could adopt if it thought advisable. The authority decided to am end the lieense to permit the running of two extra A and B cars during December and January, and one extra in February. The morning service on Sundays to stand. Rotorua — W airakei K Motors Ltd., also applied for a "~speeding up by 10 minutes of their Rotorua-Wairakei service. Mr. Harnpson said the speed limit of the Transport Board was complied with. The authority agreed to make the required amendment. Ruatoki-Whakatane An application by T. Wilson for an amendment of the Ruatoki-Whaka-tane time-table was agreed to. Sight Seeing Trips As the result of representations made by the Tourist Department the authority decided to call on iicensees of sight-seeing services to show cause why the minimum number of passengers to justify a trip should not be reduced. The authority was prepared to make a reduction" of the minimum from four to three and three to two. It was also prepared to hcar views on increasing the fare of two to the equivalent of three. Mr. Ryan of the R.M. Company said that so far as their RotoruaTaupo, Round Trip and Rotorua Okataina services were concerned they were prepared to accept the minimum of two at the usual prica for two; otherwise it would not be fair to booked passengers. Mr. S. Smith, for the Rotorua Bus Co., agreed to the reductions of minimums on the following services: Rotorua-Tikitere, Rotorua-Te WairoaTarawera, Rotorua Lake, RotoruaNgongotaha Mountain, Rotorua-Fairy Springs. K Motors were prepared to accept the new minimum on the Six Lakes, Rotorua-Waimangu and RotoruaTaupo trips, but pointed out that the Governnient launches would not take two passengei-s unless the price of three were paid, which would lead to complications. The amendments suggested were formally ordered for endorsement on .the licenses.
