THRILLING CHASE

Our Own Correspondent).

THE POLICE PURSUIT

(From

Whakatane, Tuesday. A report that a car corresponding to the Chrysler tourer, removed from Okoroire by the Waikeria Prison camp escapees, Arthur Albert Clayton and Graham Wilfred' Morton, had been seen on the Taneatua Road about 10 p.m. on Monday night, resulted in the local police proceeding thence. A fast and furious chase ensued. It would appear that the men had stopped their car on the roadside near Otangihaku, about three miles from Taneatua. When the car carrying the police pulled up and the constables proceeded on foot towards the men, the latter jumped into their car and raced away at top speed towards Taneatua. The police immediately. gave chase, but were greatly handicapped by the flying dust. After a chase over some nine miles, including a dash through Taneatua at speeds estimated at between fifty and seventy miles an hour, ihe police found the stolen car abandoned about one mile from Ruatoki. The police immediately set. a guard over the Taneatua bridge and instituted a search for the men. No trace having been found late last night, a halt was ealled and an early and more keenly organised search continued early this morning. It is reported that a kit of tools suitable for breaking and entering was found in the abandoned car.
