NINETEEN MILLION POUNDS Rec. Nov. 29, 5.0 p.m. Rugby, Nov. 28. The Financial Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. L. Hore Belisha was asked in the House of Commons what amount of the debt due to the United States from Britain in December was interest and what amount constituted the repayment of capital, expressed in gold pounds, and whether under the existing agreement Britain had the right to postpone payment of the latter until a future date. Mr. L. Hore Belisha, stated that the -instalment due on December was 30,000,000 dollars (£6,000,000) in respeet of capital and 65,550,000 .dollars (£13,110,000) in respeet of interest. The payment in respeet of capital could, under the existing agreement, be postponed for not more than two years, provided not less than ninety -days' advance notice had been given. Snch advance notice had not been given in the present case. The United States Treasury may under the agreement waive such notice at its discretion. Asked whether the House would be consulted before any further payment of war loan or interest was made the Prime Minister said if a request for a discussion of the matter was made through the usual channels it would receive the usual consideration, but it would not he in the public interest to have a debate at the moment.
