TAKAPUNA MEETING

MAORI BOY'S SURPRISE WIN IN CUP EVENT SPRINT TO LADY QUEX (Special to "Post"). Auckland, Saturday. Fine weather was experienced for the opening on Saturday of the Takapuna Jockey Club, showers early in the forenoon taking- the sting out of the ground. There was a good attendance. The totalisator put through £20,541 15s, against £22 974 15s for the. same day' twelve months ago, a decrease of £2433. Surprise In Maiden Blanford won the opening event, the Melrose Maiden, at double fxgures, outstaying the field. Kahau, the favourite, jumped out best from the rails position, soon to be joined by Reviver, this pair quickly getting clear of the field. Roman Mascot ran up on the oq|side of the two leaders making for the home turn, Schizanthus, British Columbia, and Blanford. The lastnamed went wide round the field and he and Roman Mascot wero in charge shortly after straightening up, but Blanford finished fast and was going away at the finish to beat Roman Mascot by a length and a-half-British Columbia was a good fourth and Laudatory, Muskon, Lady Carrington and Courthaven followed. The winner won like a pretty good sort, although the crowd he defeated were only moderates. Laudatory ran a fine race after getting left, and The Pullet is also expected to improve. The Sprinters The six acceptors for the Cheltenham Handicap lined up, Lady Quex being a slightly better favourite than High Comedy. It was a good start. Paganelli (rails) and Exaggeration going out to make the pace from the I favourite and High Comedy. Paganelli, Exaggeration, Huntingdon and Lady Quex were in close order to the home turn, Huntingdon being the first to fade out. Exaggeration just had Paganelli beaten when Lady Quex flashed up and beat Exag'geration by a neck, with Paganelli a head away. Marechal and Huntingdon were at good intervals. Lady Quex won handsomely and she will be a better horse for the run. She is to go to Feilding for the Stakes, to be run on Wednesday, and she looks like being hard to beat. Exaggeration held on after being forced to cover a lot of ground and being made a lot of use of. High Comedy broke a blood vessel three furlongs from home and he collapsed and died.

Oio' the Hat Trick By winning the Spring Hack, Gay Marigold completed the hat trick, this following- on her two success at Te Rapa- Merry Lap was a slightly better favourite than the winner, but he was a bit sore and he finished well back. The winner was at a fine price, for she really looked an odds-on prospect. Currajong got the jump out and Gay Marigold (from the extreme outside) and Royal Gallant soon joined him, the well backed Karangapa! not being well placed early. Currajong, Gay Marigold and Princess Star were in line at the home turn, just clear of Valpai, Merry Lap, Royal Gallant and Karangapai. Gay Marigold led up the straight to win by a length from Royal Gallant, with Currajong a neck back, just ahead of . Valpai. Next to finish were Lord Willonyx, Karangapai, Princess Star, Merry Lap and Ruby Dawn. Gay Marigold does not appear to be at the end of her winning run yet. Lilcely improvers are Karangapai, Valpai and Merry Lap, and possibly Princess Star. Valpai has finished fourth in each of his last three outings.

A Cup Surprise Maori Boy led all the way to win the Alison Cup in record timo and pay his few supporters a dividond of over three parts of a seore. He was attended past the stands by Great Emblern, Gay Cockade, Tcels and Royal Artist, with Gay Idca and Volimond at the rear of the field. Maori Boy was followed by Gay Cockade, Great Emblem, Refresher and Royal Artist five fuidongs from home. Tarporley here put in a run and he was up second to Maori Boy at the" turn into the straight, Great Emblem, Refresher, Gay Idea and Royal Artist following. Maori Boy shook off Tarporley in the run to the post to win by a neck, and Gay Idea finishing fast on the rails, was a neck away thirdRoyal Artist was fourth, ahead of Refresher, Great Emblem, Teels, Alloy and Volimond. Maori Boy won on his merits and he was well handled by his apprentice rider, while the rain took the sting out of the ground and he was suited by the conditions. Tarporley and Gay Idea both went good races, and the latter should show up on the country circuit. Refresher might have done better had he been permitted to run along, for he pulled hard for most of the trip. Royal Artist went nicely for the first half of the journey but after passing this point his rider was always at him, and he failed to make other than a slight impression in the straight. A Smart Youngster Coronis was an odds-on favourite for the Cambria Handicap and she duly prevailed. Rereatu and Deputy Ruler were first away, while Star Artist was a bit slow to move off. Coronis quickly ran through on the inner and was first to turn for home, attended by Gay Seton, Rere--atu, Star Ai-tist and Deputy Ruler. Gay Seton challenged Coronis, but the latter Avas doing it better at the post to win by a neck. Star Artist was three parts of a length away third, and Deputy Ruler and Enjoyment followed. The winner is a nicely built filly by Gay Shield from Phaola, and she is therefore, a half-sister to Prodice. Gay Seton did well to make a race of it when conceding 211b. Star Artist finished better than expected and Deputy Ruler showed some speed. A Deacf Heat There was a tight finish in thc Takapuna Plate and it resulted in a dead heat between King's Knave and Whakapara. The latter carried five tickets more than King's Knave, and

lyxo, and Glenvane. Prolyxo got the best of the despatch, while King's Knave was not quite in line and Psyehologist soon got chopped out. Prolyxo led Lucidus, Whakapara, Imamint and Glenvane when the field settled down. Making for the straight Prolyxo (rails), Whakapara, Lucidus and Mungatoon (outside) were in line, just ahead of Imamint and King's Knave. Once in line Whakapara drew out, to be quickly challenged by King's Knave, a fighting finish between the pair resulting in a dead heat. Prolyxo was three-parts of a length away in third place, with Glenvane fourth. The judge first of all placed Whakapara first and King's Knave second, but altered the numbers and made it a deadheat. It was a particularly stirring finish, but as the race was run King's Knave' should have won, for he had none the best of it from the start. Prolyxo had everything in her favour and failed to run on, although it must be remembered that it took two good ones to beat her. Glenvane showed improvement on Te Rapa running and Mungatoon shaped really well after being asked to cover extra ground. Imamint and Lucidus failed to stay. The High-weighters Belltopper was a firm favourite for the Tiri liigh-weight, but he was beaten by Master Norval, who gave a double figure return. Master Norval and Belltopper led out of the straight from Principal and Catch 'Em. The two leaders were still in charge going to the home turn, followed by Glenrata, Catch 'Em, Royal Survey and Sub-Editor. It was a good race to the judge, Master Norval beating Belltopper by a neck, with Glenrata only a head away. Next were Catch 'Em, Sub-Editor, Principal and Royal Survey. Tho winner did not make the turns too well and each time he carried Belltopper out with him, and they both did well under the cireumstances. Glenrata and Catch 'Em are likely improvers. An Easy Win The Fonui Handicap was a good thing for the hot favourite, Limex, who beat the second favourite, Senorita, very csmfortably. Limex waited on Senorita and Sweet Whisper to the home turn and then she came through to win very easily by a length from Senorita. Bugle Call was a couple of lengtlis away, with Sweet vVhisper, Hawthorn, Arch Ruler and Echo Song the next to arrive. Limex was ridden with great confidence and should soon score again. Senorita, who was sore before the race, was assisted by a heavy shower which lasted for ten minutes prior to starting. Bugle Call was interfered with, but did well to get third. Sweet Whisper and Miss Rewa showed some speed. Results: —
