THRILLING DRAMA
MARLENE DIETRICH STARS IN NEW ADVENTURE STORY. "SHANGHAI EXPRESS." "Shanghai Express" is a story of love and adventure, in which Marlene Dietrich plays the part of Shanghai Lily, a woman who lives by her wits in the coast cities of the Orient and who in the vernacular is known as a "coaster." It will open at the Majestic Theatre on Monday. The original story was written by Harry Hervey, a master of fiction literature having* an Oriental flavour. Recently, Hervey was discussing "Shanghai Express" with Hollywood friends and recounting his- cxperiences in the Far East.
Hervey knows the Orient from Japan to Pekin and down through the coast cities to the far-flung Malay Peninsula, with Saigon, thq port of many strange peoples, and on to the temp'led cities of Burmah and the castridden millions of India. These countries, shrouded by ageold mysteries and fretted with a kaleidoscopic change of colour and pattern of millions upon millions of strange, fascinating peoples, made his fingers itch to write the glamorous stories of "Caravans hy Night," th'e mystery of "The Black Parrot," the love lure of "Congai," the demon worship' of "Th-; Devil Dancer," and many others. "Shanghai Express," a tale of love and adventure in the East, is his latest story to 'Tbe made into a thrilling picture dpfipia.
