TAKAPUNA MEETING REVIEW OF PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY'S # FIELDS GOOD SPRINTERS ENGAGED
(Notes by
The spring meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club opens at Auckland to-day and will be concluded on Monday. Fine fields are in seven of the eight' events on to-day's card, the open sprint being very thin. Six are engaged in this, and the club has decided to pay two dividends in all fivehorse events at the meeting. It has also rearranged the first day's order of the races. They are a quantity of unknowns in the first race, the Melrose Maidens, but The Pullet, Kahau, Schizanthus and Blanford sliowed pace at Te Rapa, while British Columbia, Ilis- - pania, Reviver and Roman Mascot are possibilities. The Cheltenham Handicap ought to be a good race, even with only half a dozen runners- Lady Quex galloped well at New Plymouth before being brought north and will be hard to beat. Most opposition may come from High Comedy, Huntingdon and Exaggeration. Paganelli and Marechal also have chances, so that although only a small field the issue is open. Good Hacks ■ One of the best races of the day will be the Spring Hack, in which several fine hacks are engaged. Gay Marigold outclassed two excellent hack fields at Te Rapa and this should be good enough for the most backward backer. Karangapai, Royal Gallant, Rugby Dawn, Princess Star, Pelting, Merry Lap, Currajong and Valpai are hard to separate, and on this small track luck will play a prominent part. Trainer Pope holds a strong hand in the Alison Cup with Royal Artist and Speedmint, and this pair, with Antique, Refreslier and some of the lightweights will be in the picture. This event is more closely analysed later. With a stone penalty, Gay Seton may not be stopped from winning the Cambria Handicap, but at the difference in weight Gay Sheila may i:nprove on Te Rapa form. Rereatu is to have his first race and he is said to be good. Star Artist does not secm to be a good one, but Enjoyment and Coronis have chances. Pelagie ha's been scratched. An Open Race The hack classic, the Takapuna Plate, has filled as well as ever and has good horses engaged- There are seventeen left in and it is a hard thing to even dismiss the chances of one, so that on the face of it, it should be productive of very good botting. The half dozen fancied most, in their order of preference comprise: — Whakapara, Lucidus, Imamint, Px*olyxo, and King's Knave, with Holly Holm (who was backed to win at Te Rapa last Monday, but met with a lot or trouble) the most likely of the least backed' division. Lord Aintree was badly injured at Ellerslie on Thursday. Bell Topper's good finishing effort last Monday at Te Rapa will see him backed to win the Tiri High-weight, but he will first have to dispose of Catch 'Em, Glenrata, Royal Survey, Eldora and Royal England. To-day's card concludes with the Ponui Handicap, most fancied in this being Senorita, Limex, Arch Ruler, Holly Holm and Bugle Call. 12.0, Melrose Maiden: — The Pullet, Kahau, Schizanthus. 12.40, Cheltenham Handicap: — Lady Quex, High Comedy, Huntingdon. 1.25, Spring Hack: — Gay Marigold, Princess Star, Pelting. 2.15, Alison Cup: — Royal Artist, Antique, Speedmint. 3-0, Cambria Handicap: — Gay Seton, Gay Sheila, Rereatu. 3.45, Takapuna Plate: — Whakapara, Lucidus, Imamint. 4.30, Tiri High-weight: — Bell Topper, Catch 'Em, Glenrata. 5.15, Ponui Handicap: — Senorita, Limex, Arch Ruler.
