IN BLENHEIM TRIAL MURDERED MAN SEEN WITH ROLL' OF NOTES YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS

Blenheim, Friday. The trial of Edwald Taffant, wlV> is charged with the murdef, at Picton, on November 3, 1931, of James Flo'od, an old man, was resumed in the Supreme Court to-day. Several witriesses prbved that on divers dates between March and June o"f this year, 'accused cashed in Blenheim shops, five £20 and eleven £10 notes. Mr. E. Parry for prisoner, said tlxat the defence did not deny that accused cashed the notes, arid witness would i not be cross-examined. The defence j would explain later how accused came ! | irito possession o'f the notes. j Late in the afternoon, the Crown i | Prosecutor (Mr. P. S. K. .Macassey) ! I announced that the next witness : would be the first of two new wit- [ nesses who had not been heard in I the Lower Court. Mr- Parry, for the | defence, objected to the introducI tion of new witnesses at this stage, I and quoted section 366 of the Crimes ! Act in support of his contention. | Mr. Macassey said that due notice ; had been given of the interition to ■ call these witnesses and a copy of the deposition had been forwarded to the defence. After hearing arguments in chambers, the Judge ruled the evidence admissible. The Crown then called Jack McDonald, by occupation a farmer. The evidence was that of seeing.an old mah, who was afterward pointed out as James Fiood, in the Post Office. [ Witness saw him take a wallet from an inside pocket, extract from it a very large roll of notes, and pay some to the postal clerk. The other new witness corroborated the evidence of McDonald. Detective Hall told of an intensive search of the fences and hedges around the Picton Croquet Club's lawn where the key of Flood's cottage was discovered bnt no wallet was found. He also detailed a search of Tarrant's house where nothing of any moment was discovered. Witness was looking for a weapon.
