THE GLD KIT BAG NO LONGER V) ANTED

-By Telegraph — Copyrlght).

London, Nov. 22Following the action taken regarding soldiers' uniforms in June, the army authorities have decided to replaco the old kit bag with a pack of which the lower half detachable can be left behind when going into battle. The idea is that the new infantryman must run like an athlete from cover to cover across bullet-swept zones. The upper half of the new haversack will include the minimum of necessities such as a mess tin, an iron ration, and a cardigan. The Daily Telegraph announced that far-reaching reforms in the British soldier's clothing and equipment, designed to lighten the load carried and to permit freer movement, were being considered. The most startling recommendation was to replaee the present field service cap with a wide-brimmed felt, preferably smaller than the New Zealand or South African pattern, while steel helmets were recommended to be stored and only 4-e-issued if trench warfare again arises. The present tight-fitting jacket was condemned. It was proposed that there should be a Norfolk type of jacket with box pleats in the back, no metal buttons or titles, an open-necked khaki cricket shirt, and trousers replaced with kniekerbockers of a modified plusfours type.
