CUTTING PRICES

MANAWATU FARMER ENTERS PROTEST AGAINST TRADE COMPETITION. "Hard-up Farmer," in a letter to the Manawatu Daily Times of the 17th inst., regarding the price of butter, says: In facing up to the facts of the case with wholesalers and retailers making a chopping block of one of our most staple commodities, it must be quite clear to any thinlcing person that with butter fresh from the churn and delivered daily in Palmerston North and Feilding, the price of 5id and 6d per pound ovep the counter is absolutely ridiculous. One might forecast the bad effect actions of this kind may have upon the British market price when people at Home get to know the price we are receiving for butter sold in New Zealand, caused wholly by these insane cutting tactics by both wholesalers and retailers. One could naturally expeet the Home people to dejnand butter at the same price. Surely, sir, the various boards of direetors of the co-operative dairy companies should do something. I understand th'ere is a federation of dairy companies and yet we are heing subjected to happenings of this kind. What is the matter with these boards of direetors. I also gather from "Worker's" letter that 10 tons of butter was landed in Palmerston North last week from Auckland. Who is responsible for bringing in this foreign butter ?
