REMARKABLE FEAT
DOCTORS OPERATtE ON MAN IN LIGHT OF MOTOR . LAMPS. AN HOUR'S TASK. An astounding operation was performed in the open air on a mountainside road in South Wales hy the light . of ' a ririg 'of mot'or' headlamps-'in the early morning recently, when. doctors withdrew from a maii's hody part of a 24ft iron j:ailmg mar, 11ft of which had gone right through him. ' Jr. John Wilson, the impaled man, 1 whose homevis at Finchley, London, 1 was lying .in a critical state in Mountain Ash Hospital. He is forty yaars of age. . . ••• .. . . , Mr. Wilson was retufning from ■ Caerphilly to Mountain Ash, when at ! th6 junctioh of the- old and new roads ! at Abercyon, the.car, which he>himself j drove, crashed into the railings divid- ■ ing the two roacjs. The car demolished five uprights, and the top iron rail went clean through the radiator, bonnet, and Mi*. Wilson's body, and then through the back of the car, beyond which 'i't projected.-- • Mr. Wilson- was thus held in his seat, spitted on the iron rod. The terrific shock rendered him instantly unconscious. Two friends riding with him escapecl injury, and at once sought help. The police fetched a doctor, and then other doctors. They saw that it was impossible to move Mr. Wilson without cutting the .iron .rod,- so a fitter was found, and an anaesthetic having been given to'Mr. Wilson, the fitter sawed the bar hack and' front, and so released Mr. Wilson's hody. Cars were held up, and their headlights turned on the scene of the operation. Dr. Griffiths, assisted hy other doctors, then withdrew from Mr. Wilson's body the part of the rod remaining in it, and the injured man was taken to hospital. Th'e whole operation took nearly an hour. Th'e junetion of the two roads where the accident happened is a notorious danger spot.
