NATIVE RATES

GEORGE

STTAT/ffnrw

Sir> — In a report of the Opotiki County Council meeting which appeared in the "Morning Post" on Novembei 7 last, Cr. Black was rep.orted as having stated that he had been informed that when the natives went to Sir Apirana Ngata he told them that they could not be sued for rates for two years and to "Taihoa" till then and then see him. Having heard Sir Apirana repeatedly tell the natives the reverse, that they must pay their rates I felt it a 3uty to correct a wrong impression, hence my letter of November 14. In a recent issue Cr. Black infers that he did not make the statement attributed to him, and takes me to task for lack of verification. The obvious conclusion, therefore, is that your representative misreported Cr Blaclc. Isthatso? I must confess I was really surprised to read Cr, Black's comment at the council meeting; he must siirely know that Sir Apirana Ngata has spent the whole of his life in endeavouring to uplift the Maori race T

am, etc.

Opotiki, 18/11/32. The report of Mr. Black's remarks was quite correct.— Ed, Morning Post.
